Book 5 - Chapter 2
Chapter 2
Hiei and Yusuke sat down at the Chinese restaurant that Amaya had taken to lately. The food was good, especially the extra-spicy Curry Chicken. That was Hiei’s opinion at least, enjoying the hot human food whenever his mate had one of her varied cravings. After they had ordered, Yusuke stared at the shorter fire demon, pondering what he would talk with Hiei about. They didn’t exactly hang around each other much; Hiei preferred Kurama’s company if he had to socialize, or better yet, Amaya’s. The two of them had worked together and had a mutual respect for each other, but this was different.
They had the same situation really. Well, almost the same situation.
While both demons sat and waited, the battle demon thought, wondering about Hiei and Amaya, as well as Keiko and himself. The other two demons fought constantly, later healing each other and doing all over again later. Now, in the next few weeks, they would be parents, just as he and Keiko would. He wondered how the two of them would raise their child as Hiei spoke up.
“We’ll raise the baby as we see fit. The child is a demon; it will be trained to defend itself. It also carries Amaya’s human blood. She will raise it to be proud of its human side as we both raise it to understand its demon heritage. Do you understand?”
He nodded, already knowing the answer to the unspoken question of how the other demon knew what he was thinking. The green glowing of the eye in the middle of the demon’s forehead beneath the headband was proof enough that Hiei had been reading his thoughts. Hiei was in a secluded place, obviously not caring if anyone else saw his telepathic powers at work.
“But, aren’t you concerned that, I dunno, the baby will have it’s own powers you can’t take care of? Or that Amaya will be more attached to it, or…”
“Amaya and I will cross those bridges when they come along on our path.”
The rei-kai detective sighed, obviously accepting he and the fire demon would not be bonding over the experience of becoming fathers. After they received their food, they ate in silence, both nearly ignoring the other. They had only come for their mates’ sake, Hiei being promised an enjoyable night, and Yusuke to give his wife time to calm down.

The drug was more potent than usual; she made sure of that. She would take no chances with these two.
“Mission accomplished, sir.”
The small woman bowed to the tall being in full armor. He nodded and watched out the two-way mirror as the male demons ate their food.
“The dumb beasts, passing themselves off as human. The shorter one seems just as strong as the tall one. I have a female picked out for the tall one already. Tell me Norica. The little one. . . Is he mated?”
The small woman nodded, assuming her normal form of a tall, blonde female wearing a sari like wrap and armor. “I believe he is, Lord Kurojin, to a much younger female. While she is water-type, he is both fire and ice. He is a rarity. Ashihito will find many ways to use him.”
The woman watched the tall being as he watched the two demons. She admired his abilities as a “Beast catcher” for the Tori Hiburakku. She was happy when he accepted her as his apprentice. Now she would have a chance to catch one of the rarest demons in three worlds. There were no male Koorime and a male with at least half ice apparition blood would be a real treat for the ones who would pay to see him fight.
It was a good day for her, a good day for the hunt.
The being known as Kurojin smirked behind his sunglasses, the scar over his nose crinkling. “Master Ashihito shall be very pleased. Two fine males. I still want to get my hands on that female. The pup she will bear will be a perfect fighter; I can just see it. Take away the nurture and care, train it properly….” He grinned, his wicked smile clear in his light reflection.
“I want that whelp.”

Hiei couldn’t understand why he was so tired all of a sudden. He usually was up most of the night, and he had slept most of the day after he had finished the things he needed to. He could barely keep his eyes open as he walked back to his apartment with Yusuke.
Yusuke was having the same trouble as Hiei, fighting to stay awake as he walked. He yawned every few seconds, almost stumbling to the ground more than once.
After a huge yawn, the battle demon turned to his fire demon companion and smirked. “Maybe we should call a cab. I don’t think the girls would be happy if we... fell… asleep on... the way… back….”
As he spoke he fell, hitting the ground as he began snoring.
Hiei looked down at the detective as he fell to his knees. “Something… Not … right. Amaya….” And with that he fell into a peaceful slumber.
As both demons fell, the beings called Norica and Kurojin walked over to them and picked them up. They nodded to each other as they opened a gate to the Makai in the side of the wall, taking their quarry to their training grounds.

Maya and Keiko were laughing over a cup of tea when the water demon had a cold chill run down the water mo-zaku’s spine. Keiko’s head shot up, not feeling right at all. She turned to Amaya and frowned.
“Something isn’t right.”
Amaya nodded as she spoke. “Something is wrong with Hiei and Yusuke. Very wrong.”
Keiko watched the other woman as she stood and reached for her communicator, a relic from her days under Koenma Daioh. Little ol’ Koenma owed her more than his fair share of favors and she felt that something was very wrong and it involved her mate.
“Yes Saikoubi, what is it. I have a mountain of paperwork and…”
“Can it, Daioh. Something is wrong. Where are Yusuke and Hiei?”
