Koenma looked down his nose suggestively at the redhead standing in front of his desk, smiling conspiritually as he spoke.

“So do you think you can handle this particular mission, Kurama?” he asked, his lips twitching as he saw the calculating in Kurama’s eyes.

Kurama tapped his chin speculatively, carefully keeping a straight face at the unsaid.

“Oh, yes. This mission sounds… perfectly executable,” he said finally as he figured out how he’d handle his small companion.

“Perfectly executable.”

Hiei glanced dubiously at Kurama as they stopped in front of a small well-kept brick building in the downtown area.

“You’re sure there is a potentially dangerous being here?” he asked, nodding tightly at the building. He was settling more and more into his old stiff mannerisms.

“Oh, yes. Half dragon, half human, totally humanoid in appearance. Very deceptive,” he said enthusiastically. Hiei narrowed his eyes at him as they stepped into the building. The redhead’s face was straight. The redhead’s face was never straight when he was honest. He chewed himself out mentally for not looking to see what the sign on this building said as they entered a waiting room. He held back as Kurama walked up to the counter.

“We’ve heard about one of your residents, named Kirei?” Kurama inquired smoothly, his lips twitching threateningly. He was glad his back was to Hiei, glad he’d thought of a way to word the inquiry without giving anything away. The woman behind the desk smiled at him happily as she nodded.

“Shall I bring her out to see you?” she asked, looking curiously at the scowling dark man behind the beautiful redhead. The redhead smiled at her, pleased, and nodded in affirmation.

“One moment, then, we’ll be right out to see you,” she said finally, disappearing. Kurama moved over to take a seat against a wall, pointedly ignoring Hiei’s suspicious looks. Hiei stood against the wall with his arms crossed, watching Kurama’s expression carefully for any clues, trying to tap his mind and finding it carefully neutral. The fox was so beyond obviously up to something.

After twenty minutes the door to the reception room opened, and the woman walked out. Hiei frowned in confusion. Wasn’t there supposed to be a female with her? He looked questioningly at Kurama, but found that his eyes were fixed on the woman’s arms, which were held strangely. He was abto sto snap irritably in confusion… until he noticed the bundle in the woman’s arms. His eyes widened like ruby platters. Their target was a baby? How was a baby dangerous? A shapeshifter?

The woman smiled at Kurama, holding the child out for him to take in his arms. Kurama shook his head and gently pushed her arms towards Hiei. Hiei stared at Kurama, then at the baby, and lifted his arms, forced to take it or leave it hanging there in the woman’s arms. He took the baby and pushed the blanket from her face curiously. Ruby eyes stared back at him, captivating him instantly with their almond shape. So like his! She smiled at him charmingly, wriggling in her wrap until her hair fell loose, revealing fine silver hair that reached to her ears already. She couldn’t be more than a few months old, probably freshly weaned, though even that would be suprising. He caught himself wanting to smile reassuringly at her, tearing his eyes away to glare at Kurama. He couldn’t take on such a young child as a target. He would not.

The woman smiled uncertainly at the small man’s reaction, then looked at Kurama, deciding he was taking charge.

“I’ll leave you three alone, why don’t I?” she said simply before quickly exiting, thinking that maybe they needed a moment. As soon as she’d closed the door Hiei voiced his anger.

“I will not do it, Kurama, I will not. Enma himself can’t make me do it. She’s just a baby!” he hissed, not wanting anyone to overhear him. He thrust the child suddenly at the expressionless redhead, a pain he could not explain overtaking his heart, making him want to get the child out of his vision, out of his mind. He would never forgive Kurama if he did it, either.

Kurama stood and gently pushed the child back to Hiei’s chest, noting the protective encircling of his arms around the child as she was pushed back into his care. He kept his hands over his dark love’s as he leaned close to his face to speak quietly.

“I can never fully make it up to you, Hiei, but I’ll be damned if I won’t try. She was abandoned here two days ago, and has been acting… suspiciously. There’s no one else to take care of her, but she can’t stay in this world without knowledgeable guidance. Unless a demon adopts her, she will have to be left to her own des ins in the demon world…” He glanced down at the girl for a moment, noting the eyes that were so eerily like Hiei’s; the eyes that smiled in a way Hiei’s so rarely did. He pushed the blanket away to let her arms free, and she immediately wrapped her tiny hand around his long finger. He smiled, captivated, at her for a moment, then looked back at Hiei, whose eyes were wide with disbelief.

“What do you think, Hiei?” he asked softly, staring into his eyes. “Can we keep her?”

Hiei’s eyes misted up. His control was too tight to cry in front of humans, so he looked down at the girl in his arms, hiding his smile from view. The pain in his chest had increased, and yet changed. It was a powerful pain, but not an altogether bad one anymore. Kurama had somehow arranged this…. This? He looked back up at Kurama.

“I’m sorry,” he said softly. Kurama frowned in concern.

“What for?” he asked. Hiei stared lovingly into his eyes.

“Everything. Everything I’ve ever done to upset you… you are… so wonderful…” he said, whispering the statement as the woman appeared back in the window with another woman to look at the computer there. Kurama beamed in a manner that threatened to split his face, a look in his eyes that promised affection later.

“Did you tell them about what happened?” the second woman with the receptionist hissed at her, lowly enough that a normal human would not hear. The woman shook her head decisively.

“But what if they get home and she…” she lowered her voice further, “and she burps the fire again?” The receptionist cut her eyes towards the two men, who apparently had not overheard her, then glared at the woman, speaking just as quietly in reply.

“I’ve got the contract out. Once they sign, it doesn’t matter what she does when they get home, they’ll have sworn to deal with it,” she explained quickly, silencing as the redhead walked towards the window, pretending not to have heard.

“So,” he asked amiably, smiling at the ladies in reassurance, “what do I do to keep her?” The women smiled at him in badly masked secrecy.

“You like her then? I just have a few things for you to sign, given you brought the right paperwork and identification with you, and you’ll be set to take little Kirei home!”

Hiei stood in the reception room after Kurama went into the back, staring down at the child that would be his. He hugged her tight to his chest, and now that the roos ems empty, started to cry silently in joy. He caught the first gem, and then held his shirt to his face to prevent any more from forming. He smiled between uncontrollable, soft sobs at the girl, clutching the gem and promising himself he’d make a necklace of it later.

“Kirei… Kirei… My Kirei….”

Author’s Note – I swear her name was not INTENTIONALLY meant to conform to their names, damnit. It comes from a handle I used to have (Kirei Kitty), and I thought it was a pretty name for a dragon/human girl. Bah. I’ve stuck myself in the name mixing stereotype now, haven’t I?

There is an epilogue following this, so watch out! (You guys know you’d kill me if I didn’t give you some of Kirei’s action :P)

AWWW MAN! The hit counters reset!! *pouts mightily*
