Wait a minute, Mr. Postman

WAIT A MINUTE, MR. POSTMAN

I drummed my fingers on my desk and listened to the warmth between my lungs.  It was always there, that warmth, now that I was tagged by Spirit World. They were tracking me, watching. But I was waiting for Hiei to check in on me. The heat of the tag should intensify with the Jagan’s attention, the extra concentration of energy. But Hiei had no reason to look in on me now, unless it was to keep me silent.

I picked up a pencil. I ripped a piece of notebook paper out of my school binder and tried to recall the bare Makai alphabet, the only script Hiei could read. I shaped the letters carefully.

Hiei, I wrote. My temper ruled me. You are my ally, though I seem a traitor. Should you need me, please approach me again – but know I attend Spirit World before the day ends and will return the broken mirror and plead for clemency. They will either slaughter me or cut some deal. I will be offering my abilities. I think it is the strongest card I have. I wish you were here to counsel me, but as it is, please be aware that I abhor the road you are on and will do more to bring you beside me. I hope you meet the detective I met. He is exceptional, and you are much alike.

I thanked Hiei for the respect he’d given me and the good fights. I signed. And I added, “My life is indebted to the detective.”

He would know what I meant.  I will do anything to defend what I love, whatever love means. He should be wary.

I dressed, told Mother I was going to tutor a friend, and left.
