Chapter 2
Suichi had showered by the time Yoko got back and was curled up in his bed again, gazing out the window. He didn’t look round as Yoko came in.
“So now you see,” the redhead whispered.
Yoko sat down in an armchair. “I don't know if it’s any consolation, Suichi, but he didn’t catch me and he’s on his way to prison as we speak.”
“I don’t care.”
“No, I thought not,” Yoko sighed.
“What difference does it make if he’s in jail? Everyone else will still chase me... it doesn't change anything,” Suichi growled. Suddenly he shuddered. “I need to get out of here...”
Yoko swallowed his impatient growl. “Why so you can try to kill yourself again?” he said, rather hoarsely.
“No, because at least out there I can try and run,” the redhead retorted.
Pity and sympathy swelled in Yoko’s breast. He sighed again. “Look, Suichi, I—I can’t save your life and pay your hospital bills and then just throw you back out on the streets again. I have extra rooms; come stay with me.”
Suichi laughed. “I don’t trust you the slightest, Yoko,” he sneered.
Yoko shrugged. “That’s not the point; I don’t care if you don’t trust me. And even if you don’t, look at it logically. Which is worse, being chased down and raped a few times a week nonstop or—not that this would ever happen if you were under my care—being one demon’s plaything?”
The boy snorted delicately. “Point. Fine. Just get me out of this dump of a hospital and I’ll do whatever you want.”
----
Yoko left Suichi in his spare bedroom and went to make lunch. That poor boy...I don’t blame him for not trusting me or anyone else...I wouldn’t, were I him. I just wish there were some magical way to prove to him I wouldn’t touch him...no matter how much I may want to. He pulled plates out of the cabinet and dug through his fridge for sandwich meat. Why do I want so badly to protect him? He is gorgeous, yes, but is that really the reason why? Am I really that shallow? Or is it just because I’ve been alone for so long that I’m just reacting to the first person I’ve found who’s more pathetic than I? The fox slapped bread down on the plate a little more violently than he intended. Growling, he put everything on the table and knocked on Suichi’s door.
“What?” Came the sullen reply.
“Come get some lunch, Suichi,” Yoko said as gently as he could.
“I’m not hungry.”
Yoko sighed. “You should still eat something. Not eating isn’t healthy.”
“You’re not my mother; don’t try and act like her!”
“I can act however I damn well please, Suichi. It’s my house, after all. Or would you rather I throw you back on the streets?” Yoko regretted his outburst the moment it escaped him.
Suichi laughed. “You’re seriously threatening to kick me out five minutes after I get here because I don’t want lunch?”
Yoko snorted. “No, I—that was—I didn’t mean—“ He stopped. “Look, if you don’t want to eat that’s fine, but will you at least come out of there so I can talk to you?”
After a moment the redhead opened the door, eyeing Yoko warily. “Yes?”
“There, see was that so hard?” Yoko teased. “Come, sit down at the table. There are a few things I want to go over.”
Suichi followed, but Yoko could feel the boy’s suspicion. The redhead pulled out a chair and sat, still looking tense. The fox sat down across from him, busying himself with preparing his lunch for a moment. “Oh, would you get on with it?” Suichi growled.
“It’s nothing serious,” Yoko said around a mouthful of bread, ham, cheese, and turkey. He swallowed. “Just house rules and that nonsense. Since you’re not eating now I know you’ll be hungry later so you’re welcome to anything I may happen to have in the house. Just wash your dishes after. Similarly feel free to use whatever you want as long as you put it back somewhere near where it was when you found it. You can come and go as you want; you’re not my prisoner, after all. And I only really have one real rule: if someone knocks, do not, under any circumstances, open the door. Don’t even let whomever is outside know you heard them knock. And if the phone rings don’t pick it up. Just come find me.”
“...Why?”
Yoko sighed. “There’s a lot of people,” he said carefully, “that would prefer it if I weren’t around anymore. I’ve—I’ve been a nuisance to quite a few demons with power in the past...I don’t want you to get hurt because some jackass is trying to get to me.” Suichi’s eyes narrowed suspiciously and Yoko smiled. “I used to be a thief,” he admitted. “Pissed off quite a few people. But nothing for you to worry about.”
Suichi studied Yoko for another few seconds before saying abruptly, “I have some rules, too. Don’t touch me. I don’t care what the situation is; don’t touch me unless I say otherwise. Don’t even come too close. I don’t trust you a hair, Yoko Kurama.”
Yoko smiled. “Suichi I don’t expect you to trust me. And I swear with my life that I won’t even get close enough to touch you, that’s a promise.”
The redhead looked at a loss, as if he had been expecting a bigger fight than what he got. “Well, good.” He got up. “If that’s all...?”
Yoko cast around for something to keep the redhead there, but came up empty. He sighed. “I suppose it is. You can go do whatever you want, now...”
Suichi walked away and closed himself in his room again. Yoko sighed. You silly child, how do you ever expect to heal if you don’t open yourself up at least a little? How will you ever stop being afraid if no one can get close enough to protect you from harm?
