Shattering World
The school bell sounded with its annoying message; that school was finally over for the day. Snapping out of your thoughts, you looked around seeing everyone packing up their things and finally leaped into action. Bursting with anticipation, you controlled your urge to run and hurried out of the class room. Reaching and opening your locker, you quickly grabbed what you needed for the weekend and placed in what you didn’t have use for.
“Rose!” Startled, your reflexes kicked in and you threw a punch at what surprised you. “Whoa!” a tall young man shouted and ducked under your right hook. “Hold on cuz it’s just me,” the young man started to laugh. Blinking and realizing who it was, you sheepishly smiled and slowly closed your locker.
“Sorry Jeremy; but you of all people should know not to sneak up on me,” you reasoned.
Jeremy stopped laughing and grinned down at you. “Well what are families for if not scaring the wits out of them,” he teased. Smiling, you just rolled your eyes and started to walk towards the exit. “And besides,” he continued, following next to you. “With the way you normally react to situations, my reflexes get a work out too,” he continues to tease.
“Ha, ha, I’m not amused and anyway, I have to get home so see ya,” you waved goodbye to him and took off in a run out the doors. Jeremy watched confused as you dodged people and just shrugged his shoulders and walked towards the exit at a more leisurely pace.
“God, why the hell didn’t I take gym class?” you asked yourself for the third time since you started running home. You felt like you had only one lung and just about ready to die because of the lack of oxygen in your system. Panting harshly, you slowed down to a stop to take a breather and probably save your poor lungs from withdrawal. Hunched over with your hands on your shaking knees, you concentrated inhaling from your nose and then exhaling through your mouth. It took you a good three minutes before you could breathe normally and when you straitened up, you saw a middle aged man staring at you holding his mail that he pulled out of his mail box.
“I don’t have to call for an ambulance now, do I?” he asked you in a teasing manner. Smiling in embarrassment, you lightly scratched the back of your head while slowly walking by him.
“No, I’m fine,” you chuckled and started a light run.
“All right then. Have a nice day,” you heard a chuckle from behind you. You just waved to the man behind you without turning and kept up the light run.
Your home was approximately six blocks away from the school, which normally took you under fifteen minutes to walk, so you weren’t surprised when you rounded the next curve and could see your house. You lived in a fairly civil neighborhood and that didn’t help that a lot of your family lived around here also; aunts, uncles, cousins, the only people that didn’t live here were your sisters and brother and your last surviving grandmother who moved to Italy. You wouldn’t trade anything to leave your little world; your home.
Little did you know that while you ran up to your front door, “Where did I put those keys?” walked through the threshold, “Mom I’m home! Did that package from Shuichi arrive by any chance?” followed your nose to the kitchen, “Are we really have lasagna?” and stopped at the sight of your crying mother sitting at the table with another woman, “Mom? What happened? And who are you?” that your little world was about to come crashing down all around you.
“Honey,” your mother choked out wiping the tears from her eyes. “This is Akira Kitahana.” You felt your heart all of a sudden shatter. “Yo-your biological mother.”
