Chapter 2

Downstairs in the kitchen there was a war going on. Yusuke versus the Dirty Dishes. He eyed his opponent wearily, trying to figure out the best method to get the grease stain off the frying pan.

“Maybe I could use this!” He said triumphantly, pulling out the scrubber and dousing it with soap. He scrubbed the pan clean, rinsed it off and placed it with the other dishes on the counter.

His mind wandered to a moment ago when he saw how Kurama eyed him. That look in his eyes reminded Yusuke of how he used to look at Keiko. He was sure he saw that look in Kurama’s eyes, lust.

‘Was he just eyeing me?’ Yusuke asked himself, placing the last dish on the counter. ‘Nah. Not Kurama, besides he’s not like that…is he?’

Yusuke glanced upwards at the ceiling where his roommate was getting ready for school. He shrugged his shoulders and continued his task of cleaning up.

Upstairs, Kurama was undressing. Walking over to his dresser he slipped off his robe, letting it pool around his feet. Rummaging through the top drawer for some underwear, he thought about what happened just a few minutes ago.

“Was I just ogling Yusuke?” He asked himself aloud.

Walking to his bathroom, he placed his underwear on the hamper and turned the water on.

“No, we’re just friends, and that is all. Besides Yusuke has Keiko.” He turned the knob for the shower, contemplating what he just said. “Maybe that is why he is here. He and Keiko must have had a fight.”

Stepping in the shower, he pulled the curtain closed. He lathered up his washcloth and washed his body. Then grabbing the shampoo overhead, he poured a nice amount and sniffed. ‘Cinnamon spice’. Rinsing out the soap and shampoo from his hair, he turned off the water and dried off. One towel wrapped around his waist, the other tied around his head like a turban.

Stepping out into the hallway, he heard Yusuke singing followed by an orchestra of other noises.

“I hope he’s cleaning. It sounds more like fighting than anything.” Kurama said shaking his head and closed his door.

Yusuke on the other hand was having a fight with the vacuum cleaner. He tried reasoning with it by allowing it to suck Kurama’s curtains (by accident), but did it give in. NO! It had to make matters worse by spewing dust on the furniture.

“Man, Kurama’s gonna kill me.” He said, turning the thing from hell off. “Oh well, I guess I have to clean by hand.”

He walked back into the kitchen to retrieve a dustpan and broom. Trying to lighten up the mood, Yusuke noticed the small stereo by the bookcase. He surfed through some radio stations before he stopped. He swept the dust up as he began to sing along to “Hips Don’t Lie” by Shakira. He used the broom as a microphone as he moved his hips to the beat.

“Oh baby when you talk like that, you make a woman go mad. So be wise and keep on reading the signs of my body.”

He jumped on the coffee table, broom still in hand as he started dancing to the beat.

“And I'm on tonight, you know my hips don't lie and I'm starting to feel it's right. All the attraction, the tension. Don't you see baby, this is perfection.”

Shaking his shoulders and hips in time with the rhythm, he sashayed on the tabletop, broom handle tightly clenched between his hands.

“Hey Girl, I can see your body moving. And it's driving me crazy. And I didn't have the slightest idea. Until I saw you dancing. And when you walk up on the dance floor. Nobody cannot ignore the way you move your body, girl. And everything so unexpected - the way you right and left it. So you can keep on shaking it.”

As if on cue, Yusuke shook his butt and jumped off the table in a low crouch, slowly climbing up the side of the broom. He swept the floor to the beat and continued to shake his ass.

“I never really knew that she could dance like this. She makes a man want to speak Spanish Como se llama (si), Bonita (si), mi casa (si, Shakira Shakira), su casa. Shakira, Shakira. Oh baby when you talk like that. You make a woman go mad, so be wise and keep on, reading the signs of my body.”

He spun around in a circle, coming to a stop on his right foot and limbo under the broomstick. He let the stick rest on his shoulders while he continued to dance, then he brought it around his front to sweep again.

“And I'm on tonight. You know my hips don't lie. And I am starting to feel you boy. Come on lets go, real slow, don't you see baby asi es perfecto. Oh I know I am on tonight my hips don't lie, and I am starting to feel it's right. All the attraction, the tension. Don't you see baby, this is perfection. Shakira, Shakira.”

All the while, he never noticed a certain kitsune coming down the stairs as years of stealth earned him his title of greatest thief. Trying his best to stifle his laughter slowly approached the boy from behind and started dancing pretty close to Yusuke.

“Oh boy, I can see your body moving. Half animal, half man. I don't, don't really know what I'm doing. But you seem to have a plan-”

Yusuke stopped his song and shaking his butt when he felt something grind him from behind. Turning quickly, he saw Kurama standing there, a hand covering his mouth while the other went to his stomach. Yusuke let out what sounded between a yelp and growl.

“Damn it Kurama, how long have you been there?” Yusuke asked a bit embarrassed to be caught dancing.

“Only a little while.” Kurama replied. “I didn’t know you could dance this well Yusuke. We have to go out one night.”

Yusuke eyed his friend suspiciously. ‘What did he mean by that?’ He thought as he watched Kurama gather his belongings at the door. That’s when Yusuke froze. He noticed how handsome the fox looked in his school uniform, with a white rose in the lapel. His hair cascaded over his strong shoulders. His eyes showed brilliance like never before. Yusuke was awe-struck.

‘Damn it. What’s wrong with me?’ He asked himself. ‘Why am I thinking this way about him? Sure I’ve always thought him attractive that is until I found out he was a guy.’

Yusuke began to take in deep breaths trying to control his nerves. Kurama came to his side helping him to stand his ground. He noticed the uneasiness in Yusuke’s features and tried to comfort said boy by leading him to the couch.

“Yusuke? Yusuke are you all right? Do you feel well? I can stay home if you want me too?” Kurama asked placing his hand on the boy’s forehead to feel if he had a fever.

Relieved he found Yusuke’s temperature normal he went to place his coat back on the rack, deciding he would stay home just in case.

“No…I’m fine. Just a little winded from dancing and cleaning. Never did both at the same time.” He replied with a short laugh. He sat on the armrest of the couch.

“If you are sure Yusuke?” Kurama said walking back over to his friend. “Are you sure you don’t want me to stay?”

“No I said I’m fine. Now get outta here before you’re late.” He got up and pushed Kurama to the door, grabbed his stuff and shoved the fox outside. “Go, I can finish this later.”

“Well then, I’m off. See you tonight.” He said walking to his car. “Oh and I made reservations for dinner tonight at one of my favorite restaurants. So don’t eat anything too heavy.”

“Good, does that mean I can order anything I want?” Yusuke yelled, batting his eyelashes and poking out his lower lip.

“No Yusuke that means you can order what you want at a reasonable price.” Kurama countered with a stern look, trying to sound serious.

“Please fox-boy.” Yusuke made a puppy face. His dark chocolate eyes shined brightly as he made whimpering noises and clasped his hands together for emphasis.

Kurama trying to avoid those eyes lost and gave in. Letting out a sigh he said:

“I will see what I can do. Until then, I want this place intact.”

He opened his car door, started it up, and pulled out the driveway. Honking his horn at Yusuke, he sped off to his destination. Yusuke waved good-bye, making sure the coast was clear; he shut the door and said, “Yes Hiei. What can I do for you?”

“Hn. You should know by now my reason for coming and going, Detective is my business.” He smirked at the black-haired youth. “Why don’t you go back to that ningen girl you so adore.” Hiei said sitting on the couch’s back.

Yusuke ignored the comment, for now. He just wanted to finish cleaning, wash up, and go to his house to get some extra clothes (since he had none at Kurama’s). But no, he had to get a visit from the fire demon. Walking past said demon, he headed for the kitchen, knowing that those red orbs followed his every step.

“Because-” Yusuke began opening the refrigerator door, then closed it with distaste. He really needed a beer or something. “Because I wanted to get some space before we got married, happy now.”

“Hn, guess that will have to do for the time being. Where is the fox, we have some business to discuss.”

“You just missed him. He left for school.”

Just then, Hiei’s Jagan eye began to glow an ominous light purple. Yusuke felt a pull in his mind as Hiei invaded his thoughts. Yusuke tried to control the memories that poured out, only allowing Hiei a sliver of what he kept locked away.

“GET…OUT…OF…THERE…!” Yusuke growled, startling Hiei, which caused the demon to break his concentration.

“Is there something you wish to keep hidden, Detective. I only use the Jagan when I feel information is being withheld, consider yourself worthy of it.”

Yusuke clenched his fist tightly, while trying to calm himself down. Then without thinking, he formed his right hand into the shape of a gun and aimed it at Hiei. The fire demon saw this and took his fighting stance, hand at the ready on the hilt of his katana. Then he heard Yusuke shout “Spirit Gun”. He jumped into the air and came down, katana drawn to strike the boy. However, his attack never hit his mark. He landed on his feet and saw that no attack had been fired, instead he saw his team leader, crying?

Hiei stood there as he saw streams of tears fall from the boy’s cheek, landing on the floor and his hands. He never witnessed Yusuke like this. Of course he had seen the boy shed a few tears here and there but not like this. It seemed as if his very soul was crying. Yusuke fell to his knees, punching the floor in time with every shed tear. Hiei didn’t know what to do.

“…Detective…” Hiei approached him cautiously, trying to find the right words to say. Then an idea came to him. He had witnessed this many times by watching ningens and the thing they called a “television”. He slowly placed his hand on Yusuke’s back and began to rub. Hoping this would calm the boy down somewhat. Yusuke lifted his head and gave a small smile to his comrade. Hiei nodded his head in understanding, but when he saw Yusuke try to wrap his arms around him, the fire demon jumped back. With his katana drawn, he pointed it at Yusuke’s throat.

“Whoa, whoa.” Yusuke cried out as he stood on his feet, wiping at his face. “What are you doing?”

“You! You were going to attack me. And to think I was allowing myself to help you.” Hiei replied, slowly sheathing his sword.

“No…I…was only…going to give you…a hug…” Yusuke said, his cheeks coloring a light pink.

“A ‘hug’?” Hiei asked one brow rose in confusion.

Yusuke looked at his friend skeptically. He had to know what a hug was, right? ‘I guess not.’ He said to himself.

“Well, let’s see…a hug…a hug…I got it. A hug is a gesture; you wrap your arms around someone to show them you care or just say hi. Yeah, that’s it.” Yusuke nodded his head in agreement.

“You do realize that means nothing to me, right.” Hiei said crossing his arms over his chest. He was annoyed with the detective and wanted to find the fox.

“Well…um…what if I showed you?” The color on Yusuke’s cheeks grew darker. He saw Hiei jump at the idea, but nodded his head.

Yusuke walked over to where the demon now stood and little by little closed the space between them as he brought his arms around the demon’s neck. Hiei instinctively tensed up, but the heat from the Detective eased his tension away and he too wrapped his arms around the boy’s waist. Then as fast as they connected, Yusuke broke their embrace. Hiei reluctantly let go, the warmth fading from his body.

“See…that’s all there is to it. Simple yet effective.” Yusuke said, the room falling silent except for a small gasp coming from the front door.

“Kurama…”
