The Ghost of the School

" Hiei!!! "

Hiei groaned as he heard his little sister call him from downstairs.

" Hiei, get up!!! NOW!! "

He nearly jumped on the last bit, the short boy got up with a groan,

" I'm up, I'm up... " he muttered. The spikey-haired slacker swung his

legs off the lumpy thing he called a bed and got up, grabbing his usual

black shirt with the satanic mark inscribed in blood and his gothic

jeans, which made him look like he worshiped Satin.

As he stumbled down the rickety stairs, he was met by his sister's

constant nagging about his attire.

" You look like you slaughter lambs and give their blood to demons! "

she said in a motherly way.

" Why should you care? " Hiei said with a snort as he grabbed his

breakfast at the table, which consisted of a piece of burnt toast.

" Hiei.... "

" Yukina... " Hiei mimiced.

She brushed some of her blue hair out of her crimson eyes, the only

thing that gave way that they were twins, " If you keep dressing like

that you'll never make any friends... "

" For all you know I sacrifice my friends to Satin. " Hiei grinned.

Yukina let out another loud sigh. Before she could say anymore Hiei

got up.

" At least get to school on time! " she shouted after him as he

walked up the stairs.

'Nah.' Hiei said.

He heard Yukina leave, slamming the door behind her. They went the

the same school, but Hiei never bothered to walk with her, seeing as (in

his point of view) he was the most hated thing in the school, he didn't

want to ruin his sister's good reputation by walking next to her.

~*~

It was another hour before Hiei grabbed his backpack was out the

door. Casting an angry look at his house, which was basically was a

make-shift contraption of bricks. There were two stories, he was nest on

the top floor, and his sister at the bottom. It wasn't much of a home,

since both their parents died and no one would take them in, not even the

school knew they were living alone, no one cared, but still they tried.

The spikey-haired boy yawned as he opened the school rather lazily, "

God, I hate my life. " he muttered under his breath. The school was

about five stories high. Pretty big for a high school. Narrow hallways,

laced with doors, and ended with a huge window that stared out into the

street, halfway across each hallway, and also at the end, located next to

the windows, was a staircase. Hiei's class, which right now would be

Health, (his sister made him take it) was located on the top floor. The

spikey-haired boy sighed as he made his way up the staircases. His

teacher was pretty cool. Karasu Nokishima was the only teacher he

actually bothered to listen to. Known as Karasu, and not Mr. Nokishima

to his students, he sometimes lets Hiei get away with a few things.

Flooding the boys' restroom, setting the faculty lounge on fire, setting

the princeipal on fire (oh, wait, he got in trouble for that one...),

stealing from the cafeteria... and so on...

Hiei kicked open the door roughly and entered, making half the class

jump.

" You're going to pay for that door, right Hiei? " Karasu said behind

his mask. A weird thing about Mr. Nokishima, was that he was always

wearing a mask, assemblies, he was always wearing it, proms, wearing it,

graduation, still wearing that stupid mask... often it makes you wonder

what his expression is most of the time.

" Nah. " Hiei muttered, shoving his hands into his pockets and taking

his seat. For half the class period, Hiei spent his time kicking the

chair leg of the desk in front of him, terribly annoying the student who

was sitting there. The fun thing was, the student couldn't fight back,

he knew Hiei could kill him in a milisecond if provoked to, so it was

best to keep quiet. Hiei soon grew bored of this, though, and soon

enough was tearing out paper from the Health books and idly flinging it

at the poor student, who looked ready to cry.

As class ended Karasu called Hiei to his desk.

" I can't allow this behavior to go on, Hiei. " the teacher said, "

You're destructive persona is developing into quite the class

distraction. "

The spikey-haired boy shrugged. " Hn. "

" 'Hn,' huh? That's all you say? "

" Hn. "

Karasu shook his head. " You will be staying with me afterschool

today, serving detention. And I mean right after school. Not

five o'clock like last time. "

Hiei shrugged again, and walked out.

They day dragged on as slow as humanly possible. Hour after hour

seemed like three eternities.... then lunch.

" Hiei, Mr. Nokishima told me you had detention with him. " Yukina

said.

" What of it. " Hiei replied, poking at the mass of vomit the

cafeteria bothered to call food.

" You're going. "

" Like Hell I am. "

" Hiei, please. You can't afford to get in anymore trouble. "

" No. "

" Hiei... "

At that point Hiei turned to his sister to say something to her and

stopped, he closed his mouth, " Fine. " he said.

The last bell rang, and Hiei made his way to Mr. Nokishima's room.

To his surprise, Karasu wasn't there. He thought for sure the teacher

would be sitting at his desk, with a smug look behind that mask of his.

Hiei slid his backpack next to his desk, went up to the teacher's desk,

and started picking at the drawer lock. He was a good lock-picker, often

he had used his special techniques in prying for answers on the test when

he actually felt like passing.

But when he opened the desk, it wasn't answers he found, but his

mask. Karasu actually took it off. Hiei lifted it out of drawer and

examined it, there looked to be no significance in the mask at all. But

for some reason, Hiei found himself staring at it for a while. Then a

sudden bird call made him jump, and the mask fumbled out his hands, and

landed on the floor with a small crack. The spikey-haired boy quickly

picked it up and examined it again, there was just a tiny little crack,

hardly noticable, in it, a piece was missing. He looked at the floor,

and found the small piece. Hastily, he combed through Karasu's desk in

search of glue, but none was found. 'What kind of teacher doesn't have

glue with him?!' Hiei thought. Footsteps caught his attention and Hiei

pocketed the little piece quickly, and took his seat.

" Ah, Hiei. " Karasu said. At first the spikey-haired boy didn't

even recognize him, for he had no mask.

" Mr.... Nokishima...? " he said.

" I see even you couldn't recognize me. " Karasu said. " Sorry, I

had to leave my mask for a little while, I felt sick. "

" Hn. " came Hiei's reply. The spikey-haired boy breathed a sigh of

relief, Karasu had not noticed the little crack in the mask.

The detention lasted longer than the day, tick-tock, tick-tock,

tick-tock, tick-tock, went the clock, nearly driving Hiei crazy. Until

finally... " Alright, Hiei, you can leave now. "

" Yes! " Hiei said under his breath and left. Karasu following him,

disappearing down the hallway as the spikey-haired boy turned to the

window at the end of it.

As he made his way to the stairs, a boy stood alone by the window,

with his back to him, fiery red hair that seemed the flow to his

shoulders, neat uniform, he was probably staying after school. He was

just standing there, as if dead, but that really didn't bother him,

something else did though.

The student had no shadow.

Hiei freaked of course. The windows casted a shadow, but not him.

'Breathe...' he told himself. 'Just walk by him...just... just...'

" Hey. " his voice said without warning. 'Shit!!' he cursed at

himself. 'What the hell'd I do that for?'

But as long as he had caught the boy's attention, at least he think

he did, he might as well go onward, " Are you going to just stand there

looking like some idiot, or are you deaf? "

The boy turned. And for once, Hiei felt his breath caught in his

throat. He was beautiful. Too beautiful to be real.

" Hello? " the boy said back.

Hiei shook himself out of his daze, " What? " he said, turning back

to his cold demeanor.

The student's eyes widened, " You... you can see me? "

" Of course I can see you, dumbass. " the spikey-haired boy folded

his arms.

" That can't be possible... "

" Why not? "

" Because... I'm dead. "

Hiei felt utterly stunned, his mouth dropped open slightly. Then he

broke into a laugh, " You're kidding, right? Playing a joke on the

stupid skipper, aren't you? "

" No. I'm not. " To prove his point, the boy levitated off the

ground a good two feet. Hiei nearly jumped.

" Alright, alright, I get it. You're dead, now stop freaking me out.

"

" I'm sorry. " the ghost apologized. " It's just... no one else has

ever been able to see or hear me before. "

The ghost looked out the window and back to Hiei. " I'm Kurama

Minamino. " he said. " Who're you? "

" Hiei Jaganshi. " Hiei replied. " And good-bye. " Quickly he turned

he back to the ghost and walked very fast to the opposite end of the

hallway.

" Wait! " Kurama said, rather desperately. " Please, don't go! "

He didn't know why, but Hiei stopped in his tracks. The ghost

hovered in front of him, " Please... " Kurama said. " Can't you just

stay and talk with me for a little bit? "

" I have a little sister I have to get home to. " Hiei said.

" Then I'll come with you! "

" No, you're not. "

" Yes, I am! And you can't stop me! "

Hiei growled at the ghost, hoping to scare it away. But Kurama

stayed, looking quite determined.

" Hn. " Hiei snorted. " Fine. "

~*~

" So, I'm really the only one who was seen you? " Hiei asked as he

walked home with his poltergeist companion.

" Mm-hm. " Kurama replied. " No one else has seen me, no matter how

hard I tried to grab their attention. "

" That must suck. " Hiei kicked a rock in his path.

" Yeah, it kinda does. No one hears you, you're invisable. It

drives me crazy. "

" But you're happy I can finally see and hear you, right? "

" Yup. "

" What grade are you in? "

" Nineth. "

" Hn. "

" And what're you in? Third? "

" Shut up. "

Kurama laughed. And Hiei could've sworn it was the most beautiful

laugh he had ever heard.
