Hiei was currently on his way to Kurama’s house. He hadn't seen the fox in over a week and since he had nothing better to do he decided to visit him. As he approached Kurama’s home he saw Kuwabara exiting the front door carrying something behind his back.

Hiei glared at the boy and questioned, “What are you doing here?”

Kuwabara frowned deeply. “None of your business.”

In the blink of an eye the fire apparition was standing in front of the human. “When you are coming out of Kurama’s house it is my business.”

The cocky human asked in taunting voice, “Why cause he’s your boyfriend?”

Hiei’s eyes widen then quickly narrowed. He didn’t know how the young man had found out about his arrangement with Kurama, but it angered him nonetheless. “How dare you?!”

The demon’s tone of voice caught Kuwabara off guard. Apparently his innocent comment had struck a nerve. He stepped back and eyed the apparition carefully. “Calm down I was only kiddin’ ya.” He walked past his angry teammate and said, “I was just asking Kurama for a favor.”

Hiei watched as Kuwabara walked away. As the tall red head left he was reminded of the presence he sensed in his dream. He shook his head and quickly dismissed the idea. He didn’t go inside right away instead he stood and watched as the human made his way down the sidewalk. He realized that it was a bouquet of flowers that the youth was hiding behind his back.

‘So he’s going to see Yukina,’ Hiei thought to himself.

He was further angered by the thought of Kuwabara going to see his sister. He was tempted to go after the lovesick human, but Kurama had opened the front door and was waiting for him to come inside. He mounted the steps and forgot about what just happened.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Kuwabara was ecstatic. Today was the day he was going to ask Yukina to be his girlfriend. He had a bouquet specially made by Kurama, he was dressed sharply and he knew exactly how he was going to ask the ice maiden to be his. He felt invincible. That’s why he couldn’t figure out why his feet weren’t working. No matter how much he told them to move they stubbornly refused to take one step. Besides that problem his hands were sweaty, his heart was pounding and his breathing was irregular. He tried to tell himself that he had nothing to worry about; after all he had the flowers, the nice clothes and the right words. He had everything or so it appeared. Deep in his heart he knew what was really bothering him. He had no idea how Yukina felt about him. Every time he professed his love she would laugh and tell him how silly he was. He reasoned that it had to be the way he was asking that’s why he carefully prepared his words for today. That wasn’t the only thing that worried him. Yukina was always leaving him. Just when he thought she would be with him forever the ice maiden would return to her world leaving a dejected Kuwabara in her wake. He pushed such negative thoughts out of his mind. He had waited so long and now he was determined not to put it off any longer.

Kuwabara made his way up the path that led to Genkai’s temple. When he was about thirty feet away he could see Yukina sitting on the porch. She was watching a small yellow bird with such fascination she didn’t notice Kuwabara until he was standing in front of her. He hid the bouquet behind his back as he said, “Hello Yukina.”

The lovely maiden smiled brightly at her friend. “What a nice surprise. I wasn’t expecting to see you today Kazuma.”

Kuwabara revealed his present. “I got these for you. I hope you like them.”

“Thank you for the flowers Kazuma.” Yukina giggled with excitement as she eyed the beautiful flower arrangement in her hands. “You are such a thoughtful friend.”

Kuwabara nervously scratched the back of his head. “You know Yukina I was thinking…” His voice chickened out on him and he was unable to finish his sentence.

The ice maiden gave him a supportive smile and nodded her head encouragingly. “Yes Kazuma.”

“I think you and I should take our relationship to the next level.” He chanced a glance at Yukina to see whether or not she like what he was saying so far. She was still smiling, but her eyes reflected confusion. He spoke quickly, “I want us to be more than friends. I want you to…” Something in her big red eyes stopped him. Kuwabara realized something for the first time as he looked at her face. He gave her a sad smile and said, “There’s never going to be anything between us. We’re always going to be just friends.”

“Don’t you like being friends?”

“I do, but I want more! I want to be able to hold you and kiss you. I want…I want...I want something I can never have.”

He stood up to leave, but Yukina caught his hand and held it tight. “Please don’t be angry.”

Kuwabara looked down at her and gave her his best smile. “I could never be angry with you. I’m just mad at myself for not realizing it sooner.”

“Are we still friends?”

He swallowed nervously as he prepared to answer her. “...Yeah, we're still pals.” He let go of her hand. “I’m gonna leave now. I got stuff do and my sister will freak if I don’t get back soon.”

Yukina was smiling again. “Tell Shizuru I said hello.” She was so innocent she didn’t recognize a cop out.

Kuwabara left Genkai’s temple feeling heartbroken, but in a way he wasn’t surprised. For quite sometime he felt that a relationship wasn’t going to blossom between the two of them. It still hurt though, because she was his first love. While he walked back to his apartment he wondered if he would ever get over the beautiful ice maiden. By the time he reached his front door the only conclusion he had come to was that Hiei would be glad to hear about this.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~

“I still don’t understand why you had to help him.”

Kurama addressed the tiny figure lying next to him. “He’s in love Hiei.”

The three-eyed demon spat, “He’s in love with my sister!”

The fox lovingly stroked his companion’s arm. “I don’t know why you are so upset.”

“Because she’s my sister!”

“If I didn’t know any better I would say you were jealous.” Kurama felt the body in the crook of his arm stiffen. The fox hastily added, “I’m sorry that was a really bad joke.”

Hiei got out of bed and began to dress himself. “I have to go.”

Kurama watched the demon carefully. He wanted to apologize, but he worried he would only make the situation worse. He turned his head away for less than a second, but that was all it took. Hiei was gone.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Shortly after Kuwabara had arrived at home he left again. The thought of sitting in his empty apartment made him stir crazy. He meandered around town, went to the mall, stopped by the arcade and checked out was playing at the movie theater. Despite all his walking he was still restless, so he kept going. He moved in whatever direction his feet carried him not really caring about where he went. He eventually ended up in a grove of trees that seemed oddly familiar. While he tried to remember where he was at he sensed someone approaching from behind. He turned around and saw Hiei standing behind him.

“You better have a good explanation for being here.”

The melancholy human stood his ground. “And what if I don’t?” He knew he was pushing the demon’s buttons, but he didn’t care. If anything a fight would help take his mind off things.

“This is my area.”

“If I were you I wouldn’t go around bragging about living in a tree.” Kuwabara found his comeback so funny he laughed loudly.

Kuwabara was the last person Hiei wanted to see right now. Every time he looked at the young man he was reminded of Kurama’s words: ‘If I didn’t know better I would say you were jealous.’ The more he thought about what the fox said the more enraged he became. He glared at the source of his frustration and yelled, “Go away!”

The equally angered human pulled himself up to his full height. “Make me!”

The fire demon launched himself at Kuwabara and tackled him about the knees. The pair rolled around in the grass as they wrestled. They screamed and cursed at each other while they fought. For a brief moment Kuwabara dropped his guard and Hiei took full advantage of it. The apparition pinned the human to the ground, sat across his chest and held his arms in place above his carrot-topped head. Even though he was at a disadvantage Kuwabara still tried to free himself, but he was no match for Hiei’s superior strength. The demon cocked his arm back and prepared to punch the helpless body underneath him. However, he couldn’t bring himself to do it. The blue eyes below them held a fire in them that rivaled his own. He felt his heart skip as he noticed the icy stare the blue orbs were giving him. It chilled him, but at the same time it warmed him from head to toe.

As he gazed into Kuwabara's eyes he was once again reminded of his dream. The longer Hiei looked at the youth below him the more he felt himself drawn towards the boy. Without thinking he leaned down and gently pressed his lips against Kuwabara’s mouth. For a fraction of a second the human returned the demon’s light touch, but he quickly broke off the kiss. He heaved Hiei’s body off his chest and pulled himself to his feet.

Confusion was clearly written all over Kuwabara's face. “What the hell was that?!”

Hiei opened his mouth, but closed it without saying a word. He was about to leave, but Kuwabara grabbed his arm and held him in place.

“I asked you a question.”

The demon’s reply was curt. “I don’t have to explain myself to you.”

“You just kissed me! You have a whole lot of explaining to do.”

Hiei half-heartedly tried to jerk his arm out the firm grasp holding it. “I don’t know why I did it.” The strong hand gripping him finally loosened enough for him to pull his arm away. “Don’t worry it won’t happen again…I know you want to be with my sister.”

Kuwabara’s face fell as his mind replayed the afternoon’s events. “Yeah, but she doesn’t want me.” Since he hadn’t told anybody else about what happened he confided in the demon. “Today I was going to ask her to be my girlfriend, but it didn’t go the way I planned.” He sighed deeply. “I guess some things just aren’t meant to be.”

Hiei asked the human with a smirk, “So I don’t have to worry about you being my brother-in-law?”

Despite the hurt he was feeling Kuwabara laughed. “I guess every cloud really does have a silver lining.” He glanced at the stony demon and wondered what he was thinking. He subconsciously licked his lips and remembered what it felt like to have Hiei’s lips pressed against his own. The more he thought about it the more he wished he hadn’t been so quick to break it off. “Hiei…”

The fire apparition interrupted the young man. “I know what you’re thinking. It was a mistake made in the heat of battle…nothing more, nothing less. It will be best to just forget about it.”

Kuwabara reluctantly nodded his head. “I guess you’re right.” He turned to leave. “I’m gonna go now. I guess I’ll see you next time Koenma gives a mission.”

Hiei said with an air of distaste, “I doubt it." The human laughed then said his good-byes and the demon merely grunted in acknowledgement.

The pair parted ways. Each of them was plagued with doubts about the conclusion they came too. Hiei was trying to figure out how he lost control of his body the way he did, while Kuwabara found himself thinking about the fire demon in a new way.

Hiei leapt into the tree he was most fond of and made himself comfortable. His thoughts ran wild and he replayed the kiss over and over again. His mind recreated Kuwabara's soft lips. His nose conjured up the boy’s fresh scent. His eyes saw Kuwabara's face as if the human was standing right in front of him. His heart began to race as he relived the anticipation he felt when he quickly closed the distance between them and pressed their lips together. It couldn’t have lasted more than three seconds, but they were three seconds he vowed he would never forget.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Later that night after Kuwabara returned home he went about his evening chores in a haze. He only picked at his dinner when it was time to eat. After his shower he dressed in a pair of boxers and white tank top. He switched off the light in his bedroom and climbed in bed. Instead of sleeping he was thinking. He thought about what happened with Yukina. His heart ached as he imagined the dreams he would never share with her. He used to think they would date for a few years then get married and eventually start of family. None of that was going to happen now. He felt that he had nothing to look forward to anymore.

Just as he was about to give into despair he remembered Hiei and the excitement he felt when the demon kissed him. In a way he felt guilty about momentarily enjoying the kiss. Hiei was the twin brother of Yukina as well as an ally and a friend. He believed he shouldn’t be fantasizing about kissing the apparition. Despite the guilt he was experiencing he still felt a sense of elation. The more he thought about Hiei the less he dwelled on the disappointing afternoon spent with Yukina.

~*~MEANWHILE~*~

Hiei’s dream was back again. The same radiant being was holding him as tightly as ever. The aura was so encompassing it felt as if the demon was being bathed in warm light. He could sense that the presence was trying to talk to him, but he still couldn’t make out the words. Even without hearing the words Hiei was able to understand that they were loving ones meant to sooth him. The apparition smiled and closed eyes as he was gently rocked back and forth in the unknown being’s arms. He was so relaxed that it felt like his body would slip right through the being’s arms. In fact Hiei did actually start to drop. He fell out of the presence’s invisible arms, but he wasn’t angry about being dropped, only happy that he got to spend some more time in those loving arms.

When Hiei awoke he lying on the ground. The cool drops of dew on the blades of grass quickly revived him. It was still nighttime so he couldn’t have been asleep for than a couple of hours. His dream was still fresh in his mind. Now that he was awake he felt so empty unlike in his dream where he felt welcomed. More than anything he wanted that feeling back, he wanted to find the person who made him feel so happy. He hoped that it was a real person and not just a figment of this imagination.

He looked up at the night sky and asked the stars, “Who is it that I’m dreaming of? And why does it feel like I already know him?”

cillaxox: I know you are probably wondering what the exact nature of Hiei and Kurama’s relation is. That will be covered in the next chapter. I usually prefer to write one-shot fanfics, because my philosophy is: if I’m going to put that much detail into a character I’d rather it be one of my own creation. Sorry…I got off a tangent. Anyways, my point is I’m trying to keep this story from moving too fast, so I’m putting in more details and extending scenes more than I usually would.
