Scene 18 ------------ The Black Ash Tree Forest


* Since Hiei’s not exactly hiding, Yusuke and Kurama locate him easily. They come to a stop beneath the tree he’s lounging in.


Yusuke- Hey, Shorty. What’s up?

Hiei- Don’t annoy me today, Detective.


* Yusuke drops his head with an exaggerated groan.


Yusuke- Ahh, d---. We’re back to that again.

Kurama- Are you upset because of what Yusuke and I.. shared last night?


* Now Hiei glances down at them with a grunt.


Hiei- I could care less about what either of you.. share.

Yusuke- Then what are you doing out here?

Hiei- Why are you two still here? Don’t you have your own lives to get back to?

Kurama- Koenma is keeping an eye.. on my mates.


* Yusuke almost snickers when Kurama lowers his eyes and looks away to shield his sudden bout of anxieity over what he just said. Hiei just hmphs and looks away. The redhead shakes his head and glares back at Yusuke.


Kurama- Nevertheless, I trust Suzuka to handle things while I’m gone.

Hiei- You should never trust someone else to.. take care of what belongs to you.


* Kurama looks back up at the branch Hiei’s nearly hidden on.


Kurama- Perhaps you should heed your own words, Hiei.


* When the Koorime doesn’t respond Yusuke leans against the tree and crosses his arms.


Yusuke- Honestly, your two mates, that Fire demoness and the Kitsune, are in there worried about you.

Kurama- I believe they’re concerned that they’ve displeased you somehow.

Hiei- You could never lie to me, Kurama.. I know what has them so.. concerned.

Kurama- Then it’s because of this.. Human mate..?


* Hiei growls loud enough to shut Kurama up.


Hiei- I’m out here because that place is too d--- big!


* Yusuke snorts sarcastically and looks up at the branch above him.


Yusuke- You do realize that you’re up in a tree that’s at least 70 feet tall, right?

Hiei- I’ve lived in tall trees all my life.

Kurama- Hiei, that is behind you now.

Hiei- Why don’t you two go get on with your happy lives and keep your noses the h--- out of mine? D--- it, I should clear both your memories!

Yusuke- Yeah, you just come down here and try that again, Hiei.

Kurama- Yusuke, calm down.


* Yusuke pushes away from the tree showing his irritation.


Yusuke- You know what, I think I will be going since I’m obviously not welcome here anymore.


* Yusuke glances at Kurama then turns away.


Yusuke- Maybe I’ll drop by Genkai’s to check on Staci.. Kurama, you could come along with me to meet her. I hear Koenma thinks she’ll be available as soon as she has this baby.


* Hiei’s temple twitches, then he blinks down the branches of the tree to land on the ground in front of Yusuke. He glares up at the Toushin coldly.


Hiei- I’m wise to your games, Urameshi.. Go and visit her. I know that you won’t harm her.. I no longer control who she spends her time with.


* Hiei turns to move away.


Kurama- It must have been hard for you to be bound to a Human.. I can’t help but imagine how devastated you must have been when you found out she was pregnant.. Be honest with us, Hiei. This baby isn’t truly yours, is it?


* Yusuke turns to tilt his head incredulously toward Kurama who is now back in his Youko form.


Kurama- I’m an Alpha, myself. I know how these things can happen in large packs.

Yusuke- Then explain it to me.


* Hiei turns to level his eyes up at the much taller Kitsune.


Kurama- Her baby must belong to one of his subordinates. Otherwise he would be more concerned about what his absence might be doing to her and the child.

Hiei- She’s pregnant to me, I assure you that, Fox.

Kurama- Then you’re ashamed that you’ve spawned a halfbreed.

Yusuke- Woah, now, Youko. That’s a bit too harsh.

Hiei- Stay out of this, Yusuke! Staci’s a Human. Neither her nor the baby need me like the others did.

Kurama- You’re showing your ignorance, Hiei.


* Yusuke leaps between the two when Hiei growls.


Yusuke- Now let's not go through that crap again!

Hiei- Don’t you understand?! She’s suffered enough here! Neither of you have any idea what she’s been through.. I’ve seen it all.. Because of the bond we.. had I’ve witnessed her being raped repeatedly from the time she was brought here at a very young age.

Yusuke- She shared some of that with me, too, while she was staying at my place. She also told me that you changed all of that for her.. While she was with me she never stopped talking about you, Hiei.


* Hiei looks away.


Yusuke- Don’t you realize how much she loves you? How much you mean to her?

Hiei- She deserves better.. They all do.. But unlike them, her life can be spared once I completely release her.

Dagon- If we wanted someone else you would release us.


* They all look up toward the tree that the voice comes from. Dagon floats down from the branch he’d hidden himself on most of the night to keep watch over Hiei. This fact isn’t lost on the jaganshi now that Dagon’s revealed himself.


Dagon- That was your promise, right?

Hiei- Hn.

Dagon- So how many of us have asked to be released?

Hiei- You’re all either idiots or you lack the courage to ask me for your release.


* Hiei turns his gaze back up at Dagon.


Hiei- You’ve been in that tree all night.. Do you think me too weak to care for myself?

Dagon- I was concerned that you’d try another stupid stunt like you did..

Hiei- And you would go through that pain all over again?!

Dagon- If I have to.


* Hiei shakes his head and starts walking back toward the fortress.


Yusuke- Guess that plan didn’t work, Kurama. We might as well go since we seem to have overstayed our welcome.


* Hiei stops then turns to look at them again.


Hiei- I told you both before, you’re both welcome here anytime you come in peace.. This.. issue with Staci is my own to deal with.. Understood?


* Kurama lays his ears back a moment, then looks away from Hiei’s intense, almost challenging gaze.


Kurama- Fully.

Yusuke- Yeah. Whatever.. But won’t the baby still need your energy or whatever until it’s born?


* Hiei blinks at Yusuke.


Yusuke- I mean, it is still half demon.

Kurama- He’s made it perfectly clear, Yusuke. He doesn’t care about this consequence.


* Kurama turns and begins to move away. Hiei turns a bit hesitantly and continues back toward the fortress, lost now in his own thoughts. Dagon glances once more toward Yusuke, then waves.


Dagon- See ya ‘round, Lord Yu-Yu.


* Dagon then turns and hurries off after Hiei. Kurama glances at Yusuke when the Toushin blinks over to fall into pace beside him.


Kurama- That Crow reminds me of..

Yusuke- Yeah, yeah. He’s heard it lots of times already.. Screw this walking s---, I’m calling the Toddler for a portal.


* Yusuke lifts his wrist to show Kurama the watch communicator that he’s recently been given.


Kurama- About time you upgraded.

Yusuke- My request for it finally cleared the tyke’s desk a couple days ago.. So, you interested in going to meet Staci?

Kurama- Very much so. I’m curious as to how her condition is.


* Yusuke nods then taps the watch to turn on the tiny communicator so he can ask the Prince to open a portal for them.
