Book 4 - Chapter 13

Chapter 13

Botan and Yukina were sitting with Amaya in the living room, her eyes open and unmoving.

“She’s gone.” Yukina looked deep into her friend’s mind. She saw nothing. None of the light she had seen before, nothing to indicate Amaya was still struggling against the darkness that dared consume her.

Botan nodded as Yusuke and Keiko came in, carrying take out and looking worried. The Rei-kai detective scowled as Yukina placed her hand over Amaya’s eyes and closed them, Botan covering her with a blanket from head to toe. Yukina shed a tear, the hiraseki stones falling at her feet. Yusuke dropped his packages, walking over slowly to look at his colleague and friend, her body on the couch.

“Her mind…”

Botan looked to the man, her tears falling freely. “Nothingness. She’s an empty shell.”

Keiko walked up and stood behind them, her head hung low. She had not been that close to Saikoubi, but she respected her. She had put up with so much in the last few years. Now she was seemingly dead to them all, her mind a place of darkness.

Botan looked over at Yusuke. “What are we going to tell Hiei?”

“That he was too late.” They turned to seen Koenma in his adult form, shaking his head. “He should have gotten here sooner.”

They were all floored by the words, unbelieving that even Koenma could be so uncaring. They forgot about it as they heard running in the hall and Hiei, Kurama and an unknown demon walked through.

“Maya. No. NO!” the fire demon ran toward his wife but was picked up by a gust of wind that threw him against the wall.

“Do NOT touch her Jaganshi!” They all turned back to the female demon, stunned by what they saw. She had sprouted huge and beautiful wings, shining of iridescent white and silver. She flapped them out as a bird would do, shaking her shoulders as she walked over to Koenma. “And you. You would let a demon in your employ die because of your father’s hatred for them. You and he, the same. You make me sick.” She spat on him, catching him squarely in the face.

“Who in the hell…” Yusuke watched as the purple haired demon walked over and lifted the sheet off Amaya’s face. “Kurama…”

Kurama smiled as he watched the female demon place her hand on Amaya’s head. “This is Kanmuri Kaida. She’s the healer who can help her.”

Hiei looked up, dazed from the hit into the wall, staring at the winged demon. “What the… Why is Maya covered.”

“They thought she was dead, Jaganshi. She’s alive. Barely but she’s still fighting. What is her power?”

Yukina watched the demon as she stepped away from her friend. “She…water. She controls water.”

The tall purple haired Demon smiled down at the shorter female. “M’lady Yukina. Could you help me. I need a large vessel filled with pure water.” Yukina nodded and did as she was asked as Kaida turned to Hiei. “Hiei, you and anyone not mortal may stay. Anyone still Mortal must leave. This will not be pretty at all. The power in this room may be too great for them.”

Everyone turned and looked to Keiko as she smiled. “If it will help her get better, then I will go. Good Luck.”

*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Within twenty minutes everything was ready. Koenma, Yusuke and Botan stood behind Yukina and Kurama as Kaida sat in a chair next to Amaya.

“Jaganshi, help her sit up.”

“You said don’t…”

She smiled, understandingly. “Before you couldn’t touch her because I had to see her mind as it was before she felt your presence. She cannot rely on you to bring her out of it. I will block your presence from her. All you have to do is hold her in your lap, and restrain her if needed. Do you think you can handle those simple tasks?”

He nodded lifting his wife into his lap, holding her up so her head rested on his shoulder. She was so peaceful, so warm. He hugged her just enough he felt reassured of her being in his arms.

Kaida smiled, picking up on the slight display of affection. She said nothing as she placed her hand on the water demon’s head. Instantly her eyes shot open, glowing black, resembling the color of Hiei’s dragon.

Kaida spoke, her voice monotone.

“Show me what you need, Amaya Saikoubi.”

*~*~*~*~*~*~*

She was trying to fight the darkness. She felt like giving up. She just knew she would never regain control. She just wanted to go. She felt hopeless. Her lack of dominance over her powers scared her. She didn’t know what to do.

‘~When you can contain it, it will not longer frighten you, Saikoubi.~’

She concentrated, looking for the strange voice of a woman who spoke to her. She saw the inviting purple light above her and understood.

It was someone who could help.

“Who are you?”

She felt the warm energy coming from the voice, like a hand out to help her up.

“I am Kaida. I will help you. Do as I say and I will return you to your rightful place.”

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

“You killed in self defense, you would have killed to defend your mate. Those with power over death can learn to control it. You hare trained with the sword and bow. You can fight back your urge to kill with them. Use those skills to control your demon side.”

Kaida’s words were calm, but she knew after seeing the fears and doubts of this woman, it would take much work. She wondered for a minutes before deciding a course of action that would make this demon listen to her.

“Do you want to rejoin him?”

Amaya felt the crack in her mind, allowing her to see that Hiei was there, that he was close, holding her body to his. She could feel his tension, his worry over her.

“Yes. I want to go back to him.”

Kaida smiled inwardly. “Good. Now do as I tell you and we will have you back in his arms soon enough.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*

It had been hours since Kaida had fallen silent, her own eyes glazed over to shining white. Apparently whatever was going on in Amaya’s head was helping, she had made the first sounds she had in days, first whispers, names, a yes here, a no there. A soon after she spoke, the bowl of water nearby had sloshed around, much like it had the first time, slowly changing until it actually moved.

The beings in the room watched as the water actually seemed to be dancing. A glow emanated from it, softly and Hiei knew it was Amaya, her mind attempting to break out, her attempts to force control over it.

The water demon’s eyes closed and she collapsed backward in Hiei’s arms. Kaida pulled her hand away and closed her eyes, opening them up smiling, her eyes normal.

Hiei looked down at his wife in his arms, thankful he hadn’t destroyed the other demon. “Is she alright?”

Kaida nodded. “She needed a break. She’s in there, She will be fine. But I have locked her mind shut even from you.”

He scowled, angry at being locked out of her mind. “Why! Why and I locked out!”

Kurama looked toward Hiei, barking at him to stop. “I am sure there is a good explanation if you would calm down and listen Hiei. Kaida…”

She smiled at Kurama, thankful for him calming down the very volatile fire demon. “She will be fine, but she needs control before she can come out. She knows your there. I let her feel for you because she didn’t want to listen to me and I felt it would help if she knew someone she truly trusted was there. She has worked very hard and wants to be ready for you.”

She smiled, taking the glass of water Yukina offered her. “Put her down for a few moments Hiei, take a rest and a walk with me. We have something to discuss.”

*~*~*~*~*~*~*

“How do you know that?”

“You look deep enough within her it can be seen. I only saw a glimpse of the light. These things are very unmistakable. Do you understand now, why I cannot let her mind free without pure control? Her mind is repaired, and she would be fine, but she will have a reason to keep her control with these circumstances. I know you would not want anything to happen to the child.”

It had hit him hard and unexpectedly. His child. He should have seen it coming, They couldn’t keep their hands off each other.

“Did this situation hurt the child?”

She shook her head. “No. The baby is going to be fine, unless something happens after this. Let’s finish healing the mother, so she can have a chance to protect her child.”

*~*~*~*~*~*~*

For the next two hours, Kaida worked Amaya as hard as her mind could take, showing her all she could, amazed at how quickly she accepted her powers, the pain of her opened memories and how she fought back the fears. It seemed now that she knew something was different and that she had to work harder. Kaida was satisfied finally at her work, mentally sending her ‘patient’ a message.

“Amaya. I will let you talk to Hiei for a minute. After that I will put you to sleep. You won’t wake up until your body naturally wakes you. Is this alright with you?”

Amaya spoke up, her mind clear and bright again, ready to face anything the world sent to her. “Why can’t I stay awake? I want to talk to Hiei and everyone else. I…”

Kaida was stern in her reply, her authority absolute. “You need to sleep, naturally. They will be here after you awaken. I will let you speak with your husband, but when I say it is time for sleep, you will sleep. Understood?”

Saikoubi nodded, knowing the air demon who had helped her knew better than she what she needed right then.

‘~Maya.~’

‘~Hiei!~’

She felt his relief as her mind raced toward the feeling of his, her physical body wrapping her arms around his as they spoke within their minds. Kaida pulled away from her, allowing them a few minutes to reconnect. Even if he was a badass fire demon, they were still adorable at that moment.

The Air demon walked back to the couple, placing her hand on the female’s head. “Sleep Amaya Saikoubi.”

The water demon immediately fell limp in her husband’s arms. The fire demon looked up, holding his limp wife close. “What?”

“Take her to bed, Jaganshi.”

“She’s not…”

Kaida shook her head as she sat back down. “She needs to sleep. Don’t wake her up. When her body says it is time to awaken, she’ll wake up. She needs it to let her mind recover from the healing process. Can’t you listen to anything? Pick her up, take her to the bedroom and both of you go to bed!”

Kaida smiled as she gave the order, watching as the fire demon did as he was told for once, silent as he held Amaya and carried her to their bedroom, locking their door. The air demon quickly turned to the rest of the group, Speaking directly to Kurama. “I don’t think any of us wants to hear the sounds from that bedroom when she wakes up. Do you know where I can rest myself?”

Kurama nodded, his mind racing. “You can stay with me.” He turned to Koenma, his face flat. “You probably shouldn’t come here anytime soon. Hiei may want you dead.”

“He can’t do anything to me.”

Kaida smirked. “You will be surprised what someone in his position can do. Don’t be too sure Koenma. He has more than one reason to protect her, and you are a direct threat.”
