~Epilogue~

“Hiei, I’ve been worried about you. What’s wrong, why haven’t you been coming around?” It had been two weeks since Kurama had last seen Hiei. When Botan and Kuwabara dragged him out of school, explaining that Yusuke had been kidnaped, they looked to him to bring in Hiei. He never knew how to actually get a hold of the shorter demon, Hiei just managed to show up at the right time. Even after they had found Hiei, and Kurama barely negotiated him into joining them, the jaganshi was colder than usual to him. When he left instead of joining them in defeating the ones opening the tunnel, he made an excuse for Hiei... but inwardly mulled over the events leading up to their night of fun that would have made him hate Kurama so much. Did he hurt Hiei? Were the acts too much too soon? All while they dealt with Sensui and his other human allies, Kurama tried to concentrate on the task at hand. He had successfully pushed his worries from his mind when Yusuke rejoined their group, the jaganshi in tow. As the others gathered their thoughts before entering the cave, Kurama pulled Hiei to the side, taking him into the forest far enough away from their friends not to be overheard.

“Didn’t think I’d matter much to you.” Hiei grumbled as he scuffed at the ground with heel his boot. He had to do this, it was the best thing for Kurama. Being what he was, and how he lived, it was safer for him and anyone else to keep their distance. No matter how much it hurt either of them, it was the best thing for Kurama in the long run.

“What?” Kurama shook his head in amazement as he looked over the short demon. “Hiei we’ve been... doing things together for a while now.” He softly lifted the jaganshi’s chin. “Why do you think you don’t matter to me?”

Hiei summoned the iciest gaze he could manage. “What do you mean, kitsune? With your former reputation, I thought you did that with everyone. It certainly didn’t mean much to me and neither do you.” He didn’t catch the movement until it was too late. The back of Kurama’s hand slammed against Hiei’s cheekbone, the sudden shot of pain making Hiei wince. It wasn’t the pain from the slap, the pain was the dull ache in the pit of his stomach and the knowledge that his words were hurting someone he had come to love. Even if Hiei inwardly shuddered at the idea of actually loving someone.

The wind blew through the trees, the scent vaguely of the Makai. The tunnel would open shortly, if they didn’t do anything about it. “I see.” Hiei nearly winced at the dull, blank look that Kurama gave him. All traces of worry and caring were erased, the look being one the kitsune reserved for his foes. Calmly Kurama turned on his heel and rejoined the rest of the group. Hiei used his jagan to peek at the rage and pain whirling about Kurama’s mind and instantly recoiled from the mind link. For a brief second he wanted to call out to Kurama, to tell him how much he loved him... The feeling was promptly smothered and he scowled his usual scowl. He blessed the wretched Sensui for giving him something to keep his mind off of Kurama. They rejoined the group, now ready to enter the tunnel. Kurama carefully kept his distance from Hiei, false calm exterior fooling everyone but the one that knew him better than he knew himself...
