Ch. 10: Epilogue
Well, the end of a good thing is always a little sad, but do keep those chins up. This isn't likely to be the last YYH fic I post here, and hopefully any others will be just as good. Without further delay, I present you the final chapter of ~Once Burned.~
It was odd, Kurama mused, how so much could change in only a year. School had begun again, and everyone had restarted their lives after the enjoyable summer reprieve. His younger brother had gotten into the school he wanted, and Kurama and Yusuke had started college at their chosen universities. Yusuke had finally proposed to Keiko, much to the surprise and joy of all. Kuwabara had worked up enough courage to tell Yukina straight out how he felt about her, and she had taken it with great enthusiasm, much to Hiei’s dismay. Hiei himself was still mostly the same, if a little less antisocial. He resisted a lot less when the others sought out his company, as long as those times were few and far enough between.
What had changed the most, though, was the relationship the fire demon and Kurama had begun a year before. It had started out as an uncertain, unsteady thing full of emotional baby steps and sudden flares of passion, and had evolved into something sturdy and true. The passion remained, but it had grown and matured over time. Both knew with certainty that it would never fade.
Kurama gazed out the window of the college classroom, half listening to the professor talk and half watching the sleeping figure in the tree outside. Wherever there were trees and Kurama at the same time, there would be Hiei. That was one thing that had never changed, and the redhead was glad of it. This way, he was never alone. He lived in a single-room dorm now, and he had it all to himself as long as he kept his test scores up. That came in handy whenever his hotheaded lover came calling. Kurama smiled to himself at that thought. Hiei’s visits were never dull.
Classes ended by 1:00, because Kurama had chosen early morning courses to study. That meant he had the rest of the day to do whatever he wished, once his study period was finished. That would only take a few hours if he set his priorities well, so he should be done by 4:00 at the latest.
/If a certain half-Koorime will let me finish,/ he thought, smirking a little.
To his surprise, Hiei did not show until after lights-out, when Kurama was already dressed for bed and settling under the covers. “You’re late,” the kitsune announced, propping himself up on one arm and arching a light-red eyebrow.
“I didn’t want any of your college friends barging in on us,” Hiei replied.
The other eyebrow followed the first, briefly. “Oh? Does that mean you have plans for this evening?”
The fire demon was on him faster than the fox-boy could blink, burying him beneath a flurry of black-cloaked demonic enthusiasm. Kurama laughed at the ticklish sensation of Hiei nipping and nuzzling his neck, though he tried not to be too loud. “Hiei—Hiei, slow down!”
“*No,* damn you,” the shorter male growled, “I’ve been waiting all day for this.”
Kurama sighed contentedly; it had only been a token protest anyway. He rolled his hips up into his lover’s, feeling the evidence of Hiei’s desire already stiffening against him. The half-Koorime pushed back against him, sounds of encouragement slipping quietly from his lips. At this rate it was unlikely that either of them would even get out of their clothes, but that was all right. That was what the communal washing machines in the building were for. All that mattered was being as close to each other as possible, for as long as they could.
Hiei marveled at how they could still both have this urgent passion for one another. He’d had his doubts at first as to how long this relationship would endure, but those were long gone. He didn’t need a promise of forever and a day; he damn well *knew* Kurama loved him, and would never leave him. He needed the fox too much. He demonstrated that need in every line of his body, from his toes where they curled with pleasure, to his hands fisted tightly in the fox’s hair, to his mouth that could never seem to get enough of kissing the redhead. He felt that need returned in the lithe body that arched up into him, in the hands that clutched at the shoulders of his cloak, and in the lips that devoured his own with an eagerness to rival his own. Soon breath came with more effort, and the hot friction of flesh against cloth against cloth against flesh was more than enough to take them over the edge. The fall was short and sweet, the landing soft and languid.
“Mm,” Kurama murmured, snuggling Hiei close (the fire demon did not object, could not have if he had wanted to, which he didn’t), “wonderful as always. I love you, Hiei.”
“And I you, Kurama.”
The kitsune smiled lazily, reaching up to stroke his lover’s wild, black mane. “Perhaps later tonight, after a short nap, we can try it without the clothes, eh?”
“Hn. You’re insatiable.”
“Hardly. I’m just a fox.”
Hiei mumbled “same difference” into Kurama’s shoulder, and allowed himself to be set adrift in a half-dreaming, dozing state. Kurama was only teasing and they both knew it. Soon they would fall asleep, and morning would find them before they roused themselves again. That suited them just fine.
“Goodnight, Hiei,” the redhead whispered, his voice just barely breaking through the haze Hiei’s mind had fallen into.
“Hn,” the shorter demon answered fondly. In Hieiese, that roughly translated into “Goodnight my love, my treasure, my world. Sweet dreams; I’ll be here in the morning.”
They yielded to sleep still entwined, looking for all the world as though no force in all the Ningenkai, Reikai, or Makai could move them from each other’s arms.
It couldn’t.
Hope you all enjoyed, and hope to see at least one last review from those who did. :) This fic was a treat to write, and everyone who left me words of praise and encouragement has my personal gratitude. Thank you all.
