Chapter 10: Clearing the Air

*****

Hiei’s anger flared once again on Thursday as he watched Kurama leave with his arm still about the distressed girl’s shoulders. His hands curled in to tight, and knowingly deadly fists. He knew there was nothing to be angry about, but his stomach still churned at the sight of his redhead with anyone else in such a friendly way. A low growl formed in his throat, and everyone around him took a hesitant step back, forming a small ring around the boy other than his twin sister, who just stared down the hallway along with her brother. Things were getting too complicated for either of them.

“He cares a lot about you,” Yukina placed a hand on the slightly taller boy, “You’ll see, I promise.”

“I know…” he nearly whispered, shaking his head, “Come on we should get to practice.”

“There’s no practice today, we got a game tomorrow after school, so today’s off,” Yusuke pouted. He had so much energy to waste today, too. “Oh! Hey, what are we doing for the twins’ birthday this weekend?”

“You actually remembered?” Kuwabara looked absolutely awestruck.

“Nah,” he laughed, “Not really, Keiko just asked me.”

“You’re such an idiot,” the girlfriend rolled her eyes.

“Well, we know that,” he scoffed, “but that doesn’t answer my question.”

“Ugh,” Keiko held her temples in annoyance, but Yukina seemed to find it all to be quite entertaining.

“Hey! Let’s go out and party!”

“Yusuke,” his girlfriend corrected, “You’re the only one that likes to do that.”

“How about we try the miniature golf again?”

“Uh-uh! No way! You’re not getting me anywhere near that glow in the dark place again,” Kuwabara nearly shivered at the memory.

“It’s not like I hit you very hard, and I said I was sorry,” Yusuke snickered.

“You hit me in the head with ball by bouncing it off one of the cardboard cutout and then let go of the club so it got me in the shins,” he growled.

“It was an accident.”

“I was standing ten feet behind you,” he was almost shouting, “How the hell is that an accident?”

“I said ‘Oops’ when it happened?” he shrugged ‘innocently’

“You’re such an ass,” Keiko had to really deeply massage her temples.

“Heh, heh, fine, how about if we…”

“Do nothing,” Hiei ground out.

“What? Hiei, we can’t just do nothing for your birthday,” Keiko had her hands on her hips in annoyance.

“You can take Yukina out, I’m not in the mood to celebrate this birthday,” Hiei let out a heavy sigh and headed down the hall.

“He’s got it real bad, doesn’t he?” Kuwabara rested a large hand on Yukina’s shoulder.

“Yes, but I’m beginning to wonder if it really is a good thing,” her voice was soft and filled with sadness. All she wanted was to see her brother truly happy for once in his life.

*****

“I’m sorry, Maya, but I have to start heading home,” he stopped stroking the black hair.

“Yes, I understand,” she mumbled through her arms, as she buried herself deeper into the lavish bed, “and… thank you, Shuuichi. I was so afraid that I had lost you as a friend. You may not love me the way I love you, but you are very important to me.”

“I will always be your friend,” he assured, giving her hand one last squeeze, “I’ll pick you up for school tomorrow, okay?”

“Thanks a lot,” she gave a small, pathetic attempt at a smile before burying herself in the pillow once more.

After saying good bye and giving his condolences to Maya’s mother, Kurama made his way home.

He only had an hour’s worth of homework distraction, and he was drawn back into having nothing to do but ponder about the direction of his life. He still felt the dream of being a botanist was high on his list of probabilities. Somehow he had never thought about his future beyond his career. He couldn’t think of if he would live with his mother or in a small apartment, or maybe with his girlfriend… or at this rate, boyfriend.

‘I’m gay?’ Kurama ran through his head, and tried to make it sound right, but nothing seemed to fit, ‘Homosexual? I am gay…? Gay… I like men…? No, I like Hiei. Ha, I love Hiei. I’m not gay. I’m in love with Hiei.’

“I am in love with Hiei!” he sat up quickly.

“That’s nice dear,” Shiori called from the hallway, “Now come to dinner.”

“Oh, um, yes mother,” he fumbled through his room to the doorway, where his mother was just outside.

He managed to make light conversation as he went over the same thought again and again; loving Hiei… that’s a good thing… right?

*****

“Hiei,” Kurama greeted sweetly that Friday morning, cornering him just outside of school after leading his ex up to her first class.

“Hn, how are you and Maya doing now that you’re back together?” he grumbled, still bitter about watching the taller teen holding the girl the other day.

“We’re not together, Hiei,” he let his head fall a little to one side and his amazing hair swept gracefully along with his movement.

“Could have fooled me,” the shorter boy huffed.

“It’s cute that you’re acting jealous, Hiei,” he practically purred this time, leaning in slightly closer.

“Stop saying my name,” he was getting annoyed with how calmly Kurama was taking everything. Was this all just some game for him to mess with Hiei? Had Hiei done something so horrible to him that this was just some sick revenge?

“Why? Does it bother you, Hiei?”

“You’re fucked up, aren’t you?”

“No, actually I’m still a virgin, remember?”

That sent images of possibilities about taking the innocent teen’s precious virginity. To be the first to lay his hands on the perfect body… Hiei turned a brilliant red that caused Kurama to smirk.

“You would think that I would be the one to blush at such a comment,” he smiled down at his friend.

“Shut up,” Hiei growled.

“I am sorry,” the melodic voice dropped, “I truly am.”

“About what?” he took a step back.

“Everything,” he looked up to see that Yusuke and Kuwabara were headed in their direction, probably to check on their friend, “Maybe I’ll see you around.”

“Hn,” Hiei continued to glare as the redhead walked off with his perfect posture. It was the one thing about the redhead that bothered Hiei. Such perfection always reminded him of how unworthy he was of the older teen.

“Yo, Hiei, man,” Yusuke and Kuwabara greeted him, “What was that all about?”

“Yeah, what did Kurama have to say to you?”

The shortest of them just shook his head, “It was nothing important.”

“Really? Then why do neither of you look very happy?”

“Hn, why do you think?”

“Probably because he’s been moping about over you since your ‘fight’, and you’re too stubborn to take him back and accept his apology.”

“He’s the one that freaked out on me,” he huffed.

“Freaked out? I don’t think I’ve heard you use that term before,” Kuwabara raised a skeptical eyebrow.

“Hn.”

“What did you do to freak him out anyway?” Yusuke pulled his short friend under his arm threatening to give him a noogie.

“Nothing,” he assured.

“Kurama's not the type to ‘freak out’ for no good reason,” Kuwabara pointed out.

“It’s none of your business then,” Hiei snarled, fighting to get free from Yusuke’s grasp.

“C’mon, Hiei, we’re your best buddies, hell, we’re your only buddies,” the slick haired teen placed his knuckles on his friend’s scalp, getting ready to leave that kin raw and bright red.

“Leave me alone!”

“Not gonna happen.”

“I’m not gonna tell you.”

“Then I’m not gonna let go!”

“Hee!” Hiei got a good grip on Yusuke’s elbows and managed to flip him over, making the teen land hard on his back.

“Ow… at least it’s better than getting thrown into the lockers again,” he sat up on the cool concrete.

“Idiot.”

“Man, you must be a masochist or something,” Kuwabara was still wincing at the sight.

“Yeah, Keiko’s starting to get into…”

“I don’t want to hear it!” the carrot topped man covered his ears and walked away quickly.

Yusuke hooted from his seat on the floor, “That guy is way too easy.”

“Hn,” Hiei shook his head and followed the almost gigantic teen into the school, leaving the raven haired boy on the floor.

“Hey! Wait up!”

*****

‘How the hell had that damn player gotten the better of him?’ his own deep voice scolded the limping player as he was helped off the field.

Hiei couldn’t help but groan with complete irritation, and could barely keep from killing someone at this point and time.

“Are you okay?” his sweet sister held on to his arm as she watched the nurse continue to wrap his ankle tightly.

“Yeah, I’m fine, it’s just a light sprain. It’ll heal in a few days.”

“Sorry, Hiei, we didn’t see that big guy coming at you,” Yusuke stood next to out of commission captain.

“It’s fine, just keep an eye on that Bui guy, I’ve heard about him. He’s big, fast, and strong. He has the ability to run with about three guys on him, so don’t let his ugly face fool you.”

“We’ll try,” Kuwabara saluted before he, Yusuke, and Jin returned to the game.

“Hope, we don’t break anything else,” the Irish boy never dropped his smile. That guy never lost his smile. Especially after the shorter boy finally got the courage to ask him out.

Hiei thought about it… those two seemed a lot like him and Kurama, height wise at least, and although short, Touya seemed to have the ‘seme’ part of the relationship. The out of commission player smirked at his train of thoughts. It had been a while since he thought about his real chances with Kurama.
The screams of the over excited crowded faded around Hiei as he began to daydream of possible dates with Kurama. Ever since they first met, he had tried hard to keep the thoughts of the perfect teen out of his mind so as not to frighten Kurama off, but that had obviously failed miserably.

Biting back the small smile tugging at his lips, Hiei continued to recall his usual thoughts about being with Kurama before it was actually forced upon him. He had pictured the shy redhead walking next to him, their arms barely brushing every few steps or so…

*Hiei, do you mind if I try kissing you again?*

How was he supposed to really respond to that? It took him a while, but he had finally managed to respond with an intelligent ‘okay’…

*****

It was Sunday afternoon, and Yukina and rest of the gang had gone out on the town to celebrate the birthday of the twins, but Hiei had refused to go, saying that he would meet them for dinner later, but he just didn’t want to be the fifth wheel at his own birthday party. Instead he found himself in his usual place of practice.

‘The hell?’ Hiei stared at the hiding place where he kept his sword…pulling out the new item, he watched the metal glisten in the afternoon sun.

“I thought that you might like it.”

In an instant reaction, Hiei held the sword behind him.

“Ah,” large emerald eyes stared down in surprised horror.

“K-Kurama!” he threw the sword aside.

The redhead cupped the side of his neck where the metal had connected with his skin. He was so stunned that he fell to his knees.

“Kurama, Kurama,” Hiei repeated over and over again, trying to snap his crush from the stupor he had plunged into, “Kurama, let me see.”

“It-it’s fine,” the pale hand revealed a good amount of blood dripping from his fingertips.

“Shit,” he pulled his bandana off and wrapped it about the other’s slim neck, “I… I’m so sorry.”

“I just wanted to wish you happy birthday,” he held the callused hands at his neck.

“Thank you,” he let his thumbs run over the other’s jaw line.

“Hiei,” tears started to form at the corner of his eyes, “I think you tied it a little too tight.”

“Oh my god!” Hiei shouted the term for the first time in his life as he went straight to loosening the makeshift bandage. “How’s that?”

“Much better,” he wiped away at the droplets.

“Don’t cry. You’re a guy.”

“If you can’t tell, Hiei, I’m not exactly the manliest of men,” he laughed softly, resting his forehead against the shorter boy’s.

“I guess that would make you bottom in bed,” the football player smirked.

“Mm, but your height might put you in that position,” Kurama responded playfully.

“Try that again and I’ll tighten this bandage again,” he threatened emptily.

“How do you like your gift?”

“Gift?”

“The sword.”

“Not as much as I did before I hurt you,” he runs light fingers over what used to be his bandana.

“It’s fine,” he assured, “It was just a scratch.”

“You’re still bleeding,” Hiei moved his hands to cup Kurama's jaw, “You’re lucky I wear long bandanas.”

“I guess I am,” their foreheads remained touching, and he gripped at other’s wrists. “How is your ankle?”

“My ankle?”

“I was watching the game…” he gave a soft chuckle, “I nearly screamed when I saw that much larger boy take you down.”

“It was just a sprain.”

“I know, Yusuke told me. I also heard about how you threw him into the lockers because he told you we were screwing around.”

Flashing red eyes met emerald with an accompanying snarl, “Did he also tell you how I threw him into the concrete floor because he was trying to give me a noogie?”

Kurama broke into a small fit of giggles, “No, he didn’t tell me that. He really tried to give you a noogie?”

“Hn, he won’t be trying that again any time soon… Kurama… Why are you here?”

“It’s your birthday, and I thought that you might like a new sword. Unfortunately, I have learned that although very lovely to watch, I should not be within striking distance of your sword.”

“Lovely to watch?”

Kurama blushed brightly, “I, um, kind of found you out here practicing about a week or so ago…”

“What were you doing out here?”

“Well… Yusuke sort of tipped me off to it, so I came over to check you out. I mean check on you!”

Hiei smirked, “Kurama, do… do you wanna go out to dinner?”

“What?” his eyes went wide.

“I mean with my sister and the guys from the football team. They went to see some movie and go play video games. I told them I’d meet up with them around six.”

“Um, yes, that’d be great,” he smiled, “Now you pick up that sword and show off for me.”

“Hn,” Hiei huffed, “Are you sure you’re okay?”

“I told you it was nothing more than scratch. Pick that thing up, it was expensive. I want to see some of your moves.”

Hiei gave a final look at the temporary bandage before easily slipping into his well practiced fighting stance.
