Chapter 1
Yusuke Urameshi was sitting in the ramen house where Keiko worked. They chatted together while waiting for Botan. The ferry girl had contacted Yusuke briefly to tell him Koenma had appointed him to an important mission.
He had Keiko giggling uncontrollably and it took him a little while to notice that Botan was staring at them, powder-blue tresses shaking along with her head in amusement.
“Hey Botan.” Keiko greeted.
“Hello Keiko, Yusuke. Am I interrupting you two?”
“No we were just messing around, anyone is welcome to join in.”
“Well I hate to ruin your fun Keiko, but I have serious business to discuss with Yusuke.”
“Oh, well I’ll excuse myself and give you some privacy.” Keiko frowned.
“You don’t have to go, I think it is appropriate for you to hear. You are practically part of team Keiko.” Botan said sincerely.
Keiko smiled brightly at Botan and the three gathered around a table. “Koenma has asked me to inform ke oke of his newest assignment. A sorceress namerdaerdana has come into possession of a certain spell. She has a scroll that could provide her with powers that Koenma is not comfortable with her having. The whole group will not be involved in the entire mission. Kurama, Yusuke, and I are to be the ones on the inside. Hiei and Kuwabara will hang back and be backup in case we need it. Our intent is to steal the scroll and get out.”
“So we are not expected to challenge her and fight?”
“No, you will be there primarily for protection if there is immediate trouble. This case will mainly be in the hands of Kurama and me. I have knowledge of the scroll and the layout of the sorceress’ manor, and Kurama has his thieving skills.”
“Why didn’t you ask the others here as well?”
“You are their leader Yusuke,” Botan blushed and sweat dropped, “and I was scared to ask this of Kurama. To revert back to thievery. He’d take it better coming from you.”
“All right Botan, I’ll talk to him. When does this all need to be done?”
“Within the week, so we should aga again very soon to form a plan.”
“Well, I’ll go talk to Kurama now and I’ll let the others know to meet back here tomorrow around noon.”
“I’ll be there, see ya! Bye Keiko!” Botan stood and left to report back to Koenma.
Yusuke managed to convince the red-headed kistune to help. At first he seemed upset about returning to the lifestyle he’d rather forget. But, it was a necessary evil. He would do this for Yusuke because he owed the boy and because they were friends.
The following day saw the entire Rei Kai Tantei gang gathered to discuss strategy.
“Why aren’t we fighting this witch?” Hiei asked irritably.
“Because Koenma ordered this to be a quick operation. Infiltration and removal. We get the scroll and no more. This is all he told me to do, ahat hat is what we will do.” Botan spoke with an authority none of them was used to, Hiei quickly shook his head in compliance.
“I’ve heard about this Cerdana, Hiei, she is very powerful. Not out to conquer the world, she just enjoys mischief.” Kurama said helpfully.
“Sometimes mischief that claims lives.” Botan added gravely. Kurama nodded.
“What’s the point of me and the shrimp going then?”
“You are extra security.” Yusuke replied exasperated.
“Oh.”
“Now back to the business at hand.” Botan ordered.
“Botan’s right, stay on task everyone. We’ll need a plan of action before we do this thing.”
“Well Yusuke, Botan knows the layout so it is as simple as getting information on the witch’s defenses and getting in and out.”
“That’s the jist of it Kurama. We will be entering from beneath the structure. Koenma tells me that there is a sewer entrance leading to lower levels of her abode. There shouldn’t be mush to worry about until we get near the scroll. From the information we have garnered on Cerdana, we believe that as long as she is not alerted to our presence, we should be good. She’s not the type that really worries about watching for intruders. She is overconfident, perhaps for good reason, but we will use this attitude of hers to our benefit.”
“Do you know how we should prepare ourselves for when we near the goal of stealing this document?” Kurama questioned the pretty soul guide.
“She will most likely have it in this one particular room, her treasure room. It will be locked. We aren’t sure what kind of enchantments or guards she may have in place, but we have ways to overcome that. I will have anti-spells on me when o.” “So when do we plan to execute this?” “If tomorrow is all right with you Yusuke, then I think we should do it then.” “I’ll be ready. How about everyone else?” They all agreed. “We’re in.”
