I panted heavily, drop to to my knees in intense exaustion. My clothes were ripped in several places, and stained in blood. It had indeed been a tough battle... one of the more difficult ones myself, as well as the others, had ever faced before. We would have been killed, every one of us, if I hadn't delivered the final blast upon our enemy. Though, I nearly killed mysen thn the process, I had been in my youko form, and I used a large amount of my energy in order to create such an attack. Now, I pow powered down to my human form, for I had grown too weak to stay in my ultimate form.
Hiei wasn't too far from my side. His sword was sticking in the ground beside him as he was leaning back against a fairly large tree with his arms dangling limply against his sides. He, too, looked quite beat up. His eyes were closed while he was breathing deeply, trying deatelately to regain his strength.
"Damn... that was too close for comfort..." Yusuke muttered to himself. He was still standing, though he was trembling with weakness. Kuwabara was standing beside him, trembling as well. Both of them had a hand on the other's shoulder to keep each other standing.
"You're not kidding, Urameshi..." Kuwabara grumbled tiredly in between his breathing.
Yusuke's eyes then trailed towards me.
"Hey... Kurama, are you alright?" he asked in concern. I lifted my head slowely, though I couldn't see his expression. My vision had gotten affected by my weakness, and everything seemed blurry.
"Yeah... what you did was amazing. I am surprised you are still alive." Kuwabara added.
I tried to smile, though it seemed I had been too weak to even do that. I began to feel dizzy... as if my body were swaying. My arms began to tremble, struggling to hold myself up.
Hiei's eyes opened slowely as he began to watch me, for he had been listening to Yusuke and Kuwabara.
"Kurama?" he asked as he stood straight, taking a step away from the tree in my direction.
I looked towards him, though I could barly see him. I tried to speak, but it was unsuccessful. My trembling arms could no longer support my weight, and I collapsed onto my side.
Hiei's eyes widened as he began running towards me, though I could hear him stumbling every now and then.
"Kurama!" he shouted as he dropped himself down to his knees at my side. He carefully turned me onto my back, then lifted my head gently on one of his arms. My eyes had beenwingwing too heavy to hold open, and they began to fall shut.
"Kurama! Please... please tell me you're going to be okay!" he shouted with tear filled eyes, pulling me into his lap. Yusuke and Kuwabara managed to join by my side, standing behind Hiei.
Once again, I tried to speak, let alone make a sound to assure Hiei that I wouldalrialright, but nothing seemed to be able to escape. My mouth couldn't even open. I could hold it no longer... my eyes fell shut and my body went completely limp.
"Kurama!" they all shouted in unison.
After this point, I recall nothing... I must have passed out.
----------
I groaned quite tiredly as my eyes began to flutter open. I was met by a fairly bright light shining through the window beside me. Unlike the dark sky which was at the battle, it was now bright outside. In curiosity, I placed my hands at my side, pushing myself up into a sitting position. I was sore, but not close to as much pain as I had felt the night before. My eyes glanced about my surroundings. I was laying in a large white bed, which felt rather pleasent, due to my pain. It appeared that I was inside of an apartment... in more specific, Yusuke's.
My eyes trailed in the direction of the sound of soft breathing. I smiled softly at what I had seen. Hiei was curled up in a chair at my bedside, sleeping. I chuckled softly, realizing how much he appeared like a kitten in that position.
I wasn't sure how long I had been staring at him, but I knew it had been quite a while. I felt a warm feeling flow throughout my body as I studied him. I wasn't sure what it felt like... but I knew I had had the feeling several times before.
Hiei's arms stretched out towards the bed and a yawn escaped from his mouth. When his arms pulled back to his face, he rubbed his eyes with his fingers. He tiredly lifted himself into a sitting position and dropped his arms into his lap. His eyes trailed towards me, and he smiled a bit.
"Good morning, Kurama... How are you feeling?"
I smiled in return, turning to face him as I draped my legs over the side of the bed while I sat on the bedside. I leaned back, using my arms to prop me up.
"Good morning, Hiei. I am feeling much better today."
His smile seemed to brighten as I said this.
"So... We are at Yusuke's apartment, correct?"
Hiei placed one of his hands behind his head, laughing softly as if gaining a memory that entertained him.
"Hai... we are at Yusuke's. As soon as you passed out, I struggled to find somewhere safe to get you in order to take care of you. I argued and fussed with Yusuke, finally convincing him to stay with Kuwabara for the night so that I could bring you here. It was the closest place I knew of. So... here we are." he ran one of his hands through his shining raven hair.
I smiled, chuckling a bit.
"I noticed you asleep in the chair... how long were you watching over me?" I asked, my eyes trailing down to the floor under my feet.
Hiei crossed his legs up into the chair, placing his elbows on his knees and resting his head in his hands.
"All night, really... I don't remember going to sleep. Once I placed you in the bed, I sat in this chair for a long time... just watching you sleep. I monitered your breathing, making sure everything was fine. I even found some things in Yusuke's mother's bathroom to doctor your wounds up with. When I finished with you, I did myself, then continued watching you for a while longer. You really had me worried. I am thankful you woke up in a better condition."
My eyes widened slightly in a bit of shock. I stared at the ground, unable to blink.
'I... I can't believe it.' I thought silently to myself.
'He stayed up all night... just for me. He even risked his life for me in battle...' my eyes narrowed softly in thought, but I never blinked. The same feeling from before flowed through my body once again. I was still unsure of what it was. I began to ponder on why I felt like this everytime I thought of Hiei.
Hiei must have noticed me in deep thought, because I had slipped into a day-dream state.
"Kurama?" he asked, tilting his head rather cutely as he watched me. I hadn't heard him, for I was too lost in my thoughts.
His legs slid down to the floor as he stood up, watching me more intently. As I made no changes, he walked up to me and knealt down infront of me. He laughed softly, lowering his head to try and place his face into my gaze.
"Kurama-san... are you still with me?" he asked as he lifted his hand up to my chin, carefully lifting my head for our eyes to meet.
Feeling his gentle touch seemed to pop me back into reality. I blinked once, my eyes staring directly into his. For a moment, I stayed silent, trying to figure out what had just happened. After I reclaimed my thoughts, I smiled slightly.
"Gomen nasai... Hiei. I have just been thinking about a lot lately. There's just something that's been bo..." I paused as his finger softly pressed against my lips in a gesture to silence me.
"Don't worry about it." he smiled.
"You have been going through a lot, Kurama. I understand how you must feel."
A light blush covered my face as he slowely brought his finger back. Then he stood, making his way to my side as he sat down rather close to me. At the moment, I didn't mind at all.
Once he sat down, he fell back on the bed on his back with his arms resting behind his head. His eyes glanced into mine as I turned to face him, bringing my legs back onto the bed.
"Hiei... I don't know how to thank you for everything you've done."
Hiei smiled softly at me, then seemed to wink.
"It's no problem, really." he said softly as he closed his eyes.
I smiled as well, then returned to the place where I had been sleeping earlier. I layed back comfortably, allowing my eyes to drift shut without another thought.
----------
I wasn't sure how long I had been asleep, but I was awaken by a soft touch against my lips. As my eyes fluttered open, they widened slightly in shock. Hiei was directly above me, his eyes closed, kissing me softly. His legs were spread over my sides, holding himself up right above my lap. His hands were pressed against the pillow on both sides of my head. I wasn't sure how to react.
I lifted my hands up to his chest, attempting to push him away, but he lifted his hands up to mine and interlocked our fingers. He pushed my hands down where his had been and held them down with his own. To prevent further movement, he lowered his bottom half down onto my lap, then pressed deeper into the kiss.
I blushed quite deeply, unsure of what to do. I was rather uncomfortable with the situation. I tried to turn my head to the side to escape the kiss, but he only deepened it more to prevent me from moving. I grunted, trying to express my uneasiness. After a moment, I felt him pulling back on the kiss, then our lips eventually parted.
His eyes slowely opened as they gazed into mine.
"Kurama... don't be so hesitant... just let me." he whispered softly as he nuzzled my nose with his own.
My eyes narrowed softly as my expression turned to guilt. I felt my eyes filling with tears.
"Hiei... I... I'm sorry. It's just that... This is just..." I couldn't go on. Hiei leaned forward, about to kiss me once more, but I managed to turn my head in time and his lips pressed against my cheek. I heard him growl softly.
Suddenly, one of my hands became free as one of his brushed gently against my cheek.
"Kurama..." he said, sounding rather frustrated. He turned my head to face him again and before I realized it, he was kissing me once more. I lifted my free hand to his chest, but didn't try to push him away, knowing it wouldn't do any good. He placed his hand on my chest as well, holding himself up a bit as we kissed. My eyes slowely managed to close, as did his. I began to tremble, still feeling quite uncomfortable, but I knew there was nothing I could do to stop Hiei. He leann mon more, tilting his head slightly as he deepened the kiss. My hand gripped his shirt as I tried to stop it from trembling. His hand pushed slightly harder against my chest.
A bit of shock went through me as I realized, from feeling Hiei's hand, that he was trembling as well... He began licking the outer edges of my lips, which made things worse on my side. I sunk my head as far back into the pillow as I could, though I knew it wouldn't help any, for he followed. As we continued our passionate kiss, I realized to myself that I was experiencing that warm feeling, yet again... I began to ponder upon it.
After a moment, it finally occured to me. What I had felt all this time was love... deep love... for Hiei. I was in love with him... and from the looks of what was occuring, he was in love with me as well, and this was going to be his way of proving it to me.
That when I knew... I knew... it was much, much more than a friendship...
