Chapter One

Time was one thing he'd always have, he had it in abundance. Kurama stared at the clock, watching the minutes tick by. No matter how long he stared he couldn't make the time slow. He picked up the pen off his desk. A single message was scribed on the blank sheet of paper. He tore the paper and carried it down the steps with him. He was leaving for a few weeks and didn't want his mother to worry about his absence. The need for some personal space was much needed.

As much as he loved his mother, her attempts at playing matchmaker were begining to grate strongly on his nerves. There was no female she could set him up on a date with where he'd take an interest. It wasn't possible, it wasn't that he couldn't be attracted to a female. His interest happened to lie elsewhere for the time being. True his feelings would never be returned nor could he ever act upon them. He placed the note on the fridge door where she'd be sure to see it.

To try would end a friendship he had worked to hard on building. He would be content to watch the man from afar and be thankful for what time they did spend together. Lately, it wasn't much but that was understandable.

The ringing of the telephone interrupted as he finished packing up his bag. His lean fingers reached over to pick up the handset. "Hello."

"Hey Kurama, it's Yusuke."

"How are you?" Kurama put another pair of pants in the bag.

"Umm, can you come by? There's something I need to talk to you about." Uncertainty could be heard in his voice.

"I was actually about to head out and spend a few weeks in the Makai. Can it wait or is it important?" Kurama placed the last shirt in the bag.

"I don't think it can wait and it's important."

"Very well, I'll stop by on my way out of town. I'll see you then." He hung up the phone and closed the bag. What would make Yusuke worry? Probably having trouble with Keiko again and needing advice.

The two were scheduled to be married in the next three months. Whatever his problem was he should work it out before that time occured. Not that Kurama minded helping the other man out when it was needed, he just had enough problems of his own. There was only so much love advice one could give when they couldn't handle their own.

He grabbed his bag wanting to set out before anyone else got home. He gave one last look at the place he called home before heading out. A few weeks away, sometime alone to think things through. Maybe figure out what he wanted to do.

He knocked on the door, cursing could be heard on the otherside. No matter how much one yelled at the boy his language never improved. He chuckled listening to what sounded like glass breaking before the door was swung open. Yusuke stood there in nothing but boxers and a white tshirt.

"Come in man."

"What are you doing in here?" Kurama walked in and noticed the state the apartment was in. "Maid off this week?"

"Oh, the drunk had a few friends over last night. I'll be damned if I clean up after her and her friends." Yusuke waved for him to follow, they headed into his bedroom. "Just step on her," He told Kurama has he stepped over his mother's prone figure on the floor.

"Maybe you should get her off the floor." Kurama bent down to move the woman that was laying in her own vomit. The smell hit him as he rolled the woman over, it almost made him lose his breakfast.

"Come on man before she wakes up." Yusuke yelled at him from his bedroom door. He walked over to his bed and grabbed the brown envelope. He waited for Kurama to come in and shut the door. "You know I got up this morning wanting something to eat. So I went to find something, of course there's nothing in there." He tossed the package at the other man, who caught it. "I remember the one time when I was big enough to finally see inside the freezer, I asked my mom what was in that damn thing. She told me just some paperwork, birth certificates and all that bullshit. Nothing I'd want to see right. Well, I finally got nosey and decided to take a look. Wasn't going to get any breakfast so what the hell. Take a look inside man."

Kurama didn't feel right prying into the older woman's belongings but Yusuke looked very upset. He pulled out a handful of papers. Yusuke had the ones he was meant to look at on top. "It's your birth certificate."

"The ones under it."

Kurama placed his on the bed and looked at the next one. He grabbed Yusuke's again to check the date, the same date. Everything was the same except this one belonged to a female. "I don't understand, is this one a mistake?"

"Look at the next document."

Kurama placed both birth certificates down on the bed. "A death certificate, two weeks after the date of the birth. I'm sorry Yusuke, she never spoke to you about any of this?"

"Don't get sappy on me now fox. Look at the paperwork behind it and tell me what you think. I was never good in biology or any class for that matter but I'm not stupid either."

"Verywell." Kurama saw the report on the child's death. It was listed as some form of congenital heart failure, heart problems. "Okay, what am I looking for?"

"The blood type, her blood type. It states her blood type was A+, that can't be right can it?"

"Why do you say that?"

Yusuke looked at him, "Because I'm O+, shouldn't she have the same type as me. Especially if she was my twin."

Kurama looked over the paperwork once more, "You are right, that wouldn't be possible. Maybe it was just a typo on their part." He scanned over the next page, it was written again. "It might not be a typo, it's here again. What are you suggesting Yusuke?"

"I'm saying I want to know the truth. Is it simply a fuck-up or did something else happen. How did she really die or did she even die. I can't ask my mother, she can't remember her own name. I guess I'm asking for your help Kurama. I want you to help me sneak into the hospital, look through their old files and see what we can find."

"That's illegal, you know that don't you." Kurama sighed in defeat knowing he'd do it. "Alright, we can go tonight if that is your wish."
