(A/N: This pretty much takes place in the few months of quiet after the Dark Tournament.

Edit* ^^; Sorry, not an update, I just want to diclaimer this and not have it taken off. Same thing with the rest of my fiction. And plus, to those who read this, I promise I'm working on the sequel.)

Disclaimer: I don't own Yu Yu Hakusho, I don't make money off of this, or I'd update a LOT more often than I do.

Chapter 1

Sweet Dreams

The cold night bit into his exposed flesh, making it difficult not to shiver as he waited in silence with the youko at his side. His black hair drifted in front of his face, tickling his nose. Once again Kuronue wondered why he kept his hair as long as he did. Any movement now would not only anger Kurama, but alert the guards as to where they were.

Earlier that night they had snuck into a well guarded... shack. Nothing described it better than that. Kurama had never given him reason to doubt so he kept his mouth shut when the kitsune directed him to where their next target would be. The village wasn’t exactly a rich one, the only area that wasn’t unkempt or occupied with an awfully constructed clay home was a single pristine house. It’s walls practically gleamed in the moonlight, the greenery trimmed into odd shapes. That obviously was the overseer’s home, or the ‘lord’ of the city. For some reason the shack Kurama had pointed out had two guards, who tried horribly at looking like an average citizen. Now Kuronue knew why they would be robbing the shack instead. Whatever was in there had to be important, and better yet expensive.

The thieves snuck up behind both guards. With a quick twist both guards were down for the count. Kuronue kept watch as Kurama gathered the now dead guards to lean against the shack’s wall, next to the door. Dead bodies would quickly raise an alarm to any who walked by. Sending little bits of his energy into a vine seed Kurama wrapped it around both guards’ waist and neck, keeping them upright as the vines clung to the wall. The vines themselves would have stood out, but Kurama only spread the plants out behind each guard, their bodies blocking the vines.

A dull thunk was heard as Kurama unlocked the door. Kuronue slowly backed up, keeping his eyes open for late night passers by. As soon as the kitsune had dove into the darkness through the threshold, Kuronue followed. Slowly he pulled the door closed while his other hand rifled through his pockets. Finding what he needed he tossed the frosted crystal globe in the air. It reacted to his energy and ignited in a dim white glow. The globe floated a little to his left, keeping the light to a minimum. There weren’t any windows inside the shack, but Kuronue was careful none of the less.

The kitsune rifled silently through boxes, looking for some object. His tail twitched every now and then, a sure sign that he was lost in thought.

“Kurama, do you need the light?” Kuronue whispered as he bent over and put his mouth as close to the kitsune’s ears as possible.

“No. What I’m looking for should glow by itself, so your light would hinder my search than help it.” Kurama whispered back, his tail whacking against Kuronue’s leg. “It’s all I want here, at least for now. So take what ever else that catches your eye.”

Kuronue’s interest was peaked but decided that now wouldn’t be the right time discuss it. He stretched, his wings spreading to the fullest while he looked around the room. Nothing seemed to catch his eyes. All the items were seemingly important to the villagers, but all in all had no value any where else. His sharp eyes picked up a bit of light that reflected back to him. A ring, gold banded with a medium sized diamond and a few spatters of opal along the band, caught the light from his globe. Koronue shrugged and pocketed it.

Another light caught his eye, but this one glowed a deep blue. “Ha!” Kurama snickered as he pulled out the glowing item. It was a cloth head bandana with a band of metal across the middle. The part that glowed was an eye etched into the metal, eerily staring at the thieves. Kurama covered the eye with the palm of his hand and whispered a few words. The glow stopped and the etched eye was now shut. “Having the words that can make it sleep is handy, no?”

Kuronue snickered as he jerked his head towards the door. “Let’s go then.”

A muffled sound outside the door caught both thieves’ attention. Kuronue instantly killed his light, shoving the frosted globe back into his pocket. He nervously played with his necklace as they both listened. The guards were apparently found dead, and now their only exit was blocked. Kurama summoned his rose whip as Kuronue reached for one of the throwing knives he kept hidden within his shirt.

The door jerked open, three guards pushed their way in, not yet spotting the two intruders. Kurama nodded to Kuronue, then charged the guards. In one quick slash the three who had entered were split into two. As soon as Kurama’s whip had cut through the three, Kuronue tossed his dagger at the door, smiling when he heard it meet with flesh. The two thieves dashed out of the door, Kurama clearing the way with another sweep of his whip. A low roar started to grow into angry shouting so Kurama grabbed Kuronue by the wrist and dived into the brush.

That’s where they had been hiding for the past ten minutes. Kuronue inwardly sighed. Kurama could have cut down any of the guards that would have been after them, but he lived for the thrill, making heists more difficult (challenging is the word he would use) than they already had to be. At least Kurama saw his chance and took it. Taking a seed from his hair he placed it on the ground. It sunk into the dirt then shot out. The brush far from them shook, making the guards leap at the chance to catch them. Suddenly four vicious looking plants shot out of the shrubbery, biting down on a few of the men as they stared in terror.

That earned a laugh from the kitsune as he stood, stretching his arms over his head. “Let’s see them get out of that one...”

~oOo~

Birds chirped loudly, signaling the start of a new day. Kurama rubbed his eyes, pushing the covers off his bed. The red head just sat there for a moment, looking down at his hands. It had been a long time since he had last dreamt of Koronue. The kitsune rubbed at his eyes as he got out of bed and headed into the bathroom. “The good old days,” he whispered with a smile as he twisted the shower knob. Sleep making him sluggish, he slowly removed his night shirt, tossing them to the side as he started on his pants. The sound of metal sliding on metal, then shutting with a click made him stop and smile. The day Hiei ever used the door would be the day pigs flew. For that same reason he always kept his window unlocked.

Kurama stuck his head out of the bathroom. “I’ll just be a minute, I was about to jump into the shower.” Hiei grunted, hopping onto Kurama’s bed. “Come on Hiei, the least you could do is remove your muddy boots before you put them on my sheets.” The kitsune said calmly, holding back a smile as the little fire demon complied but not with out a few grumbles.

Electing to take a quick shower, Kurama was in and out with in ten minutes. He wrapped the large towel around his waist, tucking it in to keep it firmly where it belonged at the moment. The kitsune stifled another yawn behind his hand as he walked back into his bedroom. Hiei’s glanced his way, then returned to staring out the window.

“It’s been peaceful, hasn’t it?” Kurama said as he opened a drawer, searching for underwear.

The jaganshi shrugged. “I guess.”

“Have you seen Yusuke lately?”

“Why would I have to?”

Kurama sighed as he gathered the last piece of his clothing. Hiei wasn’t in a talkative mood, but then what else was new? Since Hiei wasn’t looking his way, he shrugged into his silk boxers with the towel still intact then removed it when everything was covered sufficiently. His white shirt was next, then his jeans. While he buttoned up his pants he turned towards Hiei. The little fire demon hadn’t moved an inch the whole time Kurama was getting dressed. “Something on your mind?”

“No....... Why?”

“You just seem a little more... distant today.”

“Hn.”

The kitsune decided to change the subject yet again. “So, you’re coming with me to Yusuke’s tonight, right?”

Hiei blinked a few times, turning away from the window. “Why?”

“His mom left for the weekend, so he’s throwing a party.”

“Yeah, that sounds like fun.” The jaganshi snapped sarcastically.

“It could be... The least we could do is be a little social. Unless, you have any other pressing matters?” Kurama knew Hiei pretty well; well enough to notice when he was bored out of his mind. Koenma had dropped the charges against both demons, but Hiei was now confined to the human world.

“Fine. But if that oaf insults me one more time,” Hiei held out his hand, summoning a small amount of flame to it, “I’m lighting his ass on fire.”
